When Kashmir is termed secular and Jammu communal | Nayantara condemns Hindus, nationalists | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 29: Strange and disgusting is the attitude of "secularists" towards Jammu province and Kashmir Valley. They, including author and close relation of Jawaharlal Nehru, Nayantara Sahgal, describe Kashmir as the only secular place in India and dub Jammu people and their pro-India attitude communal and anti-Kashmir and anti-Kashmiriyat. Nayantara Sahgal is the latest to join the ranks of those who hail Kashmir and its so-called Kashmiriyat. Accusing "Hindu rightwing" groups of fostering trouble in the NIT Srinagar campus, Sahgal the other day said at Dehradun that the effort began at the time of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS). "There has been an attempt by Hindu right wing to create trouble between Jammu and Kashmir to bring in the Hindu element from the time of Syama Prasad Mookerjee and it's still going on," she said, charging the BJP with wanting to destroy secularism in Kashmir. "Kashmir was the only secular place in India where there was no riots even during the Partition. It used to be the centre of a great religious culture," she said while holding the BJP and the RSS responsible for the NIT Srinagar episode which culminated in the exodus of non-local students more than two weeks ago. That she charged Syama Prasad Mookerjee with introducing Hindu element in Kashmir and that she accused the BJP and the RSS of fomenting trouble in the NIT campus suggested two things. One, she vouched for a Kashmir which will have no place for Hindus and the presence of the Hindus in the Valley means destruction of Kashmiri secularism. The other was her hatred for those like Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who laid down their lives for bringing Jammu and Kashmir closer to India or those who advocated one constitution and one flag for whole of the country. How biased she is towards the Hindus and nationalists and martyrs like Mookerjee and how communal is her approach towards Kashmir! When she attacked the BJP and the RSS and held them responsible for the exodus of non-local students from Kashmir, she only exposed herself. For, it was not the BJP and the RSS which fomented trouble. They, in fact, accused the oppressed and persecuted non-local students of playing politics in the institute by waving the national tri-colour and chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogan. The unfortunate students, who have been hiding their faces to secure their life, are actually the victims of the nationalism, RSS-style. When will intellectuals like Sahgal speak the truth and stand for the victims of fanaticism and fake secularism? When will they appreciate the liberal, genuinely secular and all accommodating Jammu Hindus and admit that Kashmir is the only region in the country where there is none to promote secular and pro-India politics. |
