Sainik colony: Kashmiris declare war on Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 14: Kashmiris of all hues have declared a war on Jammu. It's not just the separatists, who have unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign against the people of Jammu province, especially ex-soldiers. The so-called mainstream Kashmiri parties have also not lagged behind. They too have joined hands with the separatists. Not just this, the so-called nationalist BJP, which sought and got mandate from Jammu and Ladakh on Jammu-specific and nation-centric slogans, too, have joined the anti-Jammu forces and in a most brazen manner. It is giving overt and covert support to the ongoing anti-Jammu movement in Kashmir. The case in point is the opposition in Kashmir to the proposal on setting up of two sainik colonies in Kashmir, one each at Srinagar and Budgam. The proposal was mooted during the Rajya Sainik Board meeting in 2012, which was chaired by then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and was approved by the state Governor and the present PDP-BJP coalition Government in April this year. So much so, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, was asked to identify about 350 kanals of land for the purpose. The proposal nowhere said that the ex-soldiers belonging to other states of the country shall also be eligible for getting plots/flats in the proposed colonies. It clearly said that only ex-soldiers from J&K shall be entitled to get plots/flats in the proposed sainik colonies. The proposal was clear and yet all the Kashmiris opposed the construction of sainik colonies in Kashmir. They said the sainik colonies will be constructed on their dead bodies. "Proposed Pandit townships are on the pattern of Israeli settlements in Palestine. We won't allow it. Either for Sainiks of J&K or outside, no colony will be allowed to be established in any part of J&K," the fanatics and anti-Jammu and anti-Kashmiri Hindu elements are saying in Kashmir. The coalition Government should have stuck to the proposal, but it didn't. Contrarily, it placated the separatists and anti-Jammu forces in the Valley by asserting that there was no proposal for the establishment of sainik colonies in Kashmir and that no land had been earmarked for the purpose. The manner in which the state Government conducted itself after the separatists opposed the sainik colony proposal has only added fuel to the fire and the result is that the people of Jammu province in general and ex-soldiers in particular, are seething with anger. There is no doubt that the official policy of accommodation of the separatists' sinister view will further accentuate the regional angularities and ultimately lead to disintegration of the state. |
