'Politicians ask their aides to get registered as migrants' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 14: As the Union Government is framing a policy for return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants to the Valley the State Government has reportedly started registration of fresh migrants from the Valley. According to sources hundreds of such applications are lying with the Relief Department with the recommendations of politicians and ministers for registering them as migrants despite the fact that these people are now facing no threat in Kashmir where situation is much better now. However to take the advantage of central government's relief assistance politicians are encouraging some members of majority community who either are political activists or their relatives to get themselves registered as migrants to get relief as well as the return package which the Union Government is likely going to announce for the Kashmiri migrants. Sources said Relief Department has refused to entertain any such application on the ground that the people recommended by the politicians are neither facing any threat nor have been forced to flee from the Valley, the government is contemplating to frame a policy to give such people the relief benefits whose files are pending with the Relief Department. Sources said these families are being registered on the basis of threat perception and the directives have been issued to the relief authorities by the government to send a detailed report on such families so that the decision is taken accordingly. Sources said interestingly these families are not migrants and hence don't deserve any benefit as migrants. Moreover maximum migrant families of majority community registered with relief organization in Jammu have their family members in Valley and they reside for eight months in Kashmir. They only visit Jammu for collecting relief and ration after every month, sources added. Sources said that these migrants are acting as agents as well as property dealers for sale of migrants property in the Valley and some of them though registered as migrants themselves in Jammu have purchased hundreds of kanal of migrants land in the Valley on throwaway prices and still they continue to get relief at Jammu. Sources said it is not known when these families are facing threat perception in the Valley and have got themselves registered as migrants in Jammu. How they were able to purchase the land of migrants in the Valley. Even some migrant families have managed to get quarters at Jammu when their families are in Kashmir. Unlike the Pandit migrants these people cultivate their land and look after their other property while that belonging to Pandit migrants has been damaged and encroached. Sources said the highhandedness of these migrants has reached to such a point that over 20 families forcefully occupied the ORTs in Purkhoo camp which were vacant after the shifting of the Kashmiri migrants to Jagti township. These quarters were locked by Relief organization which had proposed to make alterations and convert these into two room sets to be allotted to remaining unregistered migrants. Forceful occupation of these quarters has generated a lot of resentment among the local people staging a demonstration at Purkhoo today and demanding that the illegal occupants be thrown out.
