Ahead of local bodies elections, BJP motivating little known regional parties for merger | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 14: Ahead of proposed Municipal and Panchayat elections, BJP is busy in motivating little known regional political parties of Kashmir these days to merge with them to gain visible support in Kashmir division. Informed sources told Early Times that at least two regional political parties based in Kashmir division which contested previous Assembly elections independently have given their nod to BJP leadership for merger. Sources said that Peoples Republican Party (PRP) which contested Assembly elections of last year on 12 tickets in Kashmir and founded arround 11,000 workers in less than year is all set to merge with BJP in next week in a scheduled function here. They said that negotiations in this regard are on between PRP President Advocate G.M Tramboo and state BJP general secretary Ashok Kaul and MLC Surinder Ambardar. "We were contacted by BJP leadership last month and then we sought some time from them to build a consensus in our party (PRP).After lot of deliberations all barring few founding members of our party gave their consent to merge with BJP to work in our constituencies and remain alive in state politics."Said one PRP member who contested elections last year One PRP member wishing anonymity said that PRP was founded by a group of intellectuals and learned man of Kashmir to provide an alternative political platform to people of Kashmir. He said that party was created to defeat some noted PDP and NC politicians in their constituencies during previous assembly elections, however due to lack of funds, it could not achieve what was designed by founding members of party. The party after its appearance in Kashmir was joined by a dozen of founding members of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) who had earlier deserted NC and PDP. Sources disclosed that BJP leadership is also busy these days to seek support of another regional political party which has workers in almost all constituencies of Kashmir and has a record of contesting elections with satisfactory figures. They said that the party includes some noted faces of Kashmir politics and if both parties agreed to merge with each other it will be big blow for regional political parties, NC and PDP. Pertinently People's conference of Sajad lone which won on two seats in previous Assembly elections has already tied up with BJP,besides some independent legislators of Jammu division. BJP which amid tall claims before elections contested Lok Sabha and assembly elections from Kashmir last time had to face defeat at all seats. Barring one candidate of BJP all others including some noted faces of BJP from Srinagar had to even lost their security desposit with election commission due to poor show in elections then. The developments are happening at a time when state government is keen to conduct Municipal and Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir. |
