Pak army violates ceasefire in Uri sector: Defence spokesman | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 17: Pakistani troops violated ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked firing from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector last night, a defence ministry spokesman said. Col N N Joshi told that Pak troops fired with automatic weapons towards Indian forward positions in Uri sector last night. However, Indian troops also retaliated effectively and the exchange of fire continued for some time. There was no report of any damage or loss of life on this side, Col Joshi said, adding it was not immediately clear whether Pak troops suffered any damage. This was the first ceasefire violation by Pak troops in the sector this year.India and Pakistan agreed for a ceasefire in 2003 on LoC and International Borders (IB) in the Jammu and Kashmir. However, Pak troops have violated the ceasefire a number of times in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region.Col Joshi said troops guarding the LoC are already on high alert to foil any infiltration attempt from across the border, where a large number of militants are waiting to cross over to this side as snow on upper reaches had started melting. He said massive search operation was going on in the woods in the frontier district of Kupwara, where a militant is believed to have been killed early this morning. However, only one Ak rifle has been recovered, he said adding that body has not been recovered so far. The operation was going on when the reports last came in, he said. |
