Srinagar, May 17: In a novel way to ridicule the dilatory policies of the government, the people in one of the areas of Srinagar, have come up with an interesting idea- erecting a placard in the middle of the road with 'shame for PWD' inscribed on it.
The road connecting Srinagar with Kashmir's premier health care hospital SKIMS has been in shambles since past two years with government making least efforts to repair the road.
Dismayed and dejected over R&B's dismal performance despite several pleas, the locals finally came up with an idea that at present is catching eye of every passerby. People erected a hoarding type board in the middle of the road, castigating the government over such a mess.
People while expressing concern over the dilapidated condition of the road since years said despite the route connecting Srinagar with SKIMS, the government was least bothered about repairing it. "We have seen the tough time faced by the ambulances while ferrying patients to SKIMS through this route. It is bumpy and risky ride, fraught with the dangers of fatal accidents," says Nazir Ahmad, a local resident of Alamgariu Bazar, wherein the hoarding has been erected.
R&B has been coming under severe criticism over its dismal functioning vis-à-vis repairing the roads in both Jammu as well as Srinagar. There are voices of concern being heard from across with people training guns against R&B for failing them in providing better road connectivity even in summer and the winter capitals. With the people of Alamgari Bazar setting an example by giving vent to their anger against the mis-goveranace, such scenes are expected to be seen in various other places wherein government has failed to deliver goods. "It is a nice way to put your anger infront. You can expose the government's non- serious approach by such things. Whether there are inundated streets, incomplete drainage, defunct street lights, people can erect the sign boards to display the real action of the government which functions on peoples' money," says Masood Ahmad, another local.
Meanwhile, people from other areas of the state are also up in arms against government's inaction in repairing the roads. It is being found at large that the roads connecting to hospitals are generally in the dilapidated conditions, exposing government's approach in safeguarding the lives of its people.
Minister for Public Works Abdul Rehman Veeri obligated the engineers last month to complete the unfinished projects without delays. The minister again recently has directed the engineers of the R&B department to begin macadamizing roads across the valley.
The coarse placard between the lanes at Alamgari Bazar has a stern message for authorities - work or face public wrath.
