WB, TN, Kerala, Puducherry reject BJP
Exit Poll
5/17/2016 11:25:18 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 17: The politically conscious people of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry have, according to the exit polls (May 16), completely rejected the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies and reposed faith in other parties already active in these states since decades. If the exit polls are correct, then it can be said without any hesitation that the BJP and Prime Minister Modi will suffer defeats in these four states like the defeats they suffered in Delhi and Bihar in 2015.
As per the exit polls, the BJP might not open its account in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, despite the Prime Minister's hectic campaigning in these states and despite the fact that scores of Union Ministers and BJP national president and several BJP central leaders campaigned in these states for weeks. Tamil Nadu assembly has 232 members, Kerala assembly has 140 members and Puducherry assembly has 30 members. That the BJP will fail to open its account in these states or could capture only a couple of seats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu only shows that Prime Minister Modi and his party failed to click and that there is no taker of the BJP's policies in these states. According to exit poll, the BJP may win one or two seats in West Bengal where the assembly consists of 294 seats. In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had won two seats in West Bengal and led in 28 assembly segments. That it could win only a couple of seats in the assembly elections in West Bengal only shows that the popularity of the BJP under the leadership of PM Modi and party president Amit Shah has declined and declined massively.
Assam in the north-east is the only state where the BJP, according to the exit polls, is expected to put up a good show not because it is popular there but because of some local factors. The fight in Assam is between the original inhabitants and Bangladeshis, who have changed the demography of the state and have very significant presence in 30 to 40 assembly constituencies. The BJP has contested the elections in Assam on the planks which reassured the local population that it, if came into power, will throw the Bangladeshis out of Assam and create a situation that would deter the Bangladeshis to enter Assam in the future. Another factor that could help the BJP in Assam is the anti-incumbency. The Congress has been in power in Assam since 2001 and TarunGagoi of the Congress has been in the driver's seat since then. The third factor is polarization. The BJP didn't leave any stone unturned to polarize the electorate and induce the Hindu electorate like the BJP had done in Jammu province in 2014. The BJP had sought and got the mandate from Jammu on the Hindu and the nation's planks, but after getting the mandate the BJP dumped its Jammu constituency and hobnobbed with those in Kashmir who hated the Indian Constitution and the people of Jammu province. There is a section in Assam who feels that the BJP will not deliver any of the promises it held out in case it came into power as it "more secular than the other secular parties are" and that "the victory of the BJP, which has stitched an alliance with three other local parties, if at all it happens, will be a victory by default". They appear correct. The local population or the Hindus have no other option but to support the BJP and its allies. For them, like the people of Jammu province, it is the question of existence and survival.
