India bill on J&K causes ripples in Pakistan
5/17/2016 11:43:03 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 17: Islamabad today said that it has lodged its protest before the United Nations (UN) over a draft bill in the Indian Parliament over the map of J&K and also revealed that it has urged the UN not to undermine its resolutions on J&K. The world body should uphold its resolutions and ask India to withdraw the bill, which, according to Pakistan, "violates international law.
"Pakistan has expressed serious concern to the United Nations Secretary General and the President of the UN Security Council, through letters by our Permanent Representative in New York, with regard to the Indian Government's efforts to introduce a controversial 'Geospatial Information Regulation Bill' in the Indian Parliament," the Pakistan Foreign Office (PFO) said.
"It further said that 'in violation of UNSC resolutions, the official map of India has been depicting the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India which is factually incorrect and legally untenable. The letter calls upon the United Nations to uphold the UNSC resolutions and urge India to stop such acts which are in violation of international law. We have urged the international community and the United Nations to fulfill their commitment with the people of Jammu and Kashmir by holding an independent and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices," PFO further said.
Through the passage of this Bill, the Government of India would penalize individuals and organizations who depict and term Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory as per the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, the PFO also said.
As per the draft "Geospatial Information Regulation Bill 2016", wrong depiction of the map of India, which includes this and other part of J&K, could land the violators in jail with a maximum term of seven years and impose a fine up to Rs 100 crore.
The whole stand of Pakistan on J&K is ridiculous. J&K is an integral part of India and PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan have been under its illegal occupation since 1947. The UN resolutions implicitly accept the claim of India over these J&K territories. The resolutions go to the extent of asking Pakistan to vacate the aggression and permit India to station its troops in the illegally-occupied territories to maintain law and order. This should clinch the whole issue about the political status of this and other part of J&K vis-a-vis India.
Indeed, the Government of India has taken right decision to move "Geospatial Information Regulation Bill" in the Parliament, which provides for severe punishment for those who depict the whole of J&K as it existed on August 17, 1947 as disputed region. The Bill when adopted by the Parliament will send a right message across the world and also show Pakistan and its Kashmir-based agents their rightful place.
The UN must reject the Pakistani evil concerns and ask Islamabad to vacate the aggression at the earliest so that New Delhi reintegrates the occupied territories with this part of J&K. The people of these areas want independence from Pakistan and they invariably also raise pro-India slogans.
