Time for Jammu Cong leaders to review stand on Jammu | India almost becomes Congress-free | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 20: It was in February 2014 that the then chairman of the BJP election campaign committee and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that the BJP will work for Congress-free India and termed the Congress as a party of "termites". No one had ever expected that Congress, the grand old party of India founded by the Britons in December 1885, would become so unpopular that it would suffer only defeats and virtually become a regional outfit, but it has really happened. Ever since the rise of Narendra Modi on the country's political horizon, the Congress suffered one defeat after another and what the May 19 elections results clearly suggest is that India has almost become Congress free. On Thursday, the Congress suffered defeats in Kerala and Assam, two of the eight states it had been in power. The defeats were comprehensive. In Assam, it was the BJP and its allies which dislodged the Congress and it was the Left Democratic Front (LDF), which trounced the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala. Of course, it won in Puducherry, but its victory was not that significant, as Puducherry is a small Union Territory region having a 30-member Assembly. That India on Thursday became almost Congress-free could be seen from the fact that it now rules only six states, including Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand and three smaller states in the North-East. These states constitute only seven per cent of the country's total population. On the contrary, the BJP now rule 10 states on its own and also share power in the states like Punjab and J&K. These states constitute more than 36 per cent of the country's total population. The rest of the country which houses 53 per cent population are ruled by the regional outfits. What has led to decimation of the Congress was its perverted ideology - ideology which had contempt for the majority community. Former Defence Minister AK Antony had in its report to AICC president Sonia Gandhi said that there was a perception among the Hindus across the country that the Congress was a anti-Hindu party and that if the Congress was to remain relevant in the country, it had to change this perception. However, the Congress high command, instead of appreciating Antony and his conclusions, pursued the same old policy and the result is that the country has rejected the Congress party. It's time for the Jammu-based Congress leaders to look back and examine the factors which had led to the defeat of the party in Jammu province in 2014. They must remember that it was their anti-majority community ideology that had culminated in the defeat of their party in Jammu province. If they want to play some role in the political arena of Jammu province, they have to identify themselves with the Jammu sentiments and abandon the appeasement policy. Their Kashmir-centric approach will not help them regain the lost political space in Jammu. They have to watch and promote the genuine interests of Jammu and thy have to tell the Congress high command that enough is enough and that they shall only work for the development of their own region and promote its interests, including political interests. The best thing for them to do would be to demand abrogation of Article 370 and trifurcation of the state and sever all of their ties with JKPCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir and others of his ilk, including Saif-ud-Din Soz, who do not represent the national ethos and who speak in the language of separatists. |
