Has BJP bartered all its promises for the sake of power? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 20: The Education Minister and government spokesman ruling out exclusive colonies for Kashmiri Pandits has put the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a tight spot as it had promised the displaced Pandit community that it would ensure their honourable return. The pressure mounted by the separatists has apparently made the government rethink about its plan to set up separate colonies for Kashmiri Pandits. "If government shelves the plan to settle Pandits in Kashmir it can prove to be a big setback for the BJP and would prove that it has battered all its promises for the sake of power," said an analyst. He said, "Separatists threatening agitation in Kashmir has terrified the PDP leadership and it doesn't want to take cajoles with separatists at a time when tourism season is at its peak." He said, "This has put the BJP's credibility at stake. If party fails to oppose the decision to shelve the proposal of separate colonies it would indicate that BJP has no say and acts as PDP's second fiddle." A Kashmir watcher said, "It's pathetic that a handful of separatists are calling the shots and are dictating terms. The powerful government has surrendered before unscrupulous brigade which can go to any extent to appease their bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC)." He said, "On one hand BJP leaders leave no opportunity to claim that Article 370 would be revoked and Kashmir problem would be solved by 2019. On the other hand they don't have the guts to tame the separatists who get their by way by threatening to close down Kashmir. It's high time for the state to take stern action against the separatists and book them. They are behaving as if Kashmir is their fiefdom." A politician said, "It's unfortunate that separatists are preventing the Kashmiri Pandits from returning to their own land. Someone needs to tell them that Kashmir doesn't belong to them only. It belongs to Pandits as well. They are no one to stop them from returning to their homeland. Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave Kashmir in 1990. They sold their properties under duress for peanuts. Even if they want to buy the properties in Kashmir at present they cannot afford as the real estate prices have skyrocketed." He said, "Kashmiri Pandits are part of parcel of Kashmiri society and it's their discretion where they would like to stay. People who are opposing separate colonies for Pandits need to bear in mind that Kashmir Pandits had to flee in 1990 as majority community couldn't save them from the terrorists and separatists. They (KPs) want to live in secure zones to ensure that history is not repeated." |
