30 GMC students taken ill after drinking filthy hostel water | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 22: The height of non-seriousness of the administration of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu towards the health of Post-Graduates (PG) and Under-Graduates (UG) students can be gauged from the fact that nearly 30 students going under treatment for Hepatitis-E after drinking water at their hostels. Pertinently, the students are continuing falling ill after drinking contaminated water for last one to two week and the matter has been taken up with the higher ups of the GMC&H Jammu but they are least bothered towards the health of the medical students. "Around 30 UGs and PGs found positive of Hepatitis-E and they are continuously under-going treatment which is also affecting their studies but unfortunately the administration has preferred criminal silence and the graph of positive of Hepatitis-E an alarming in the boys hostels of the premier hospital of Jammu province", said a senior doctor pleading anonymity. According to doctors, the jaundice outbreak in the hostel could show an upswing if the immediate measures were not put in place. A group of the Medical Students told Early Times that that the most of the water tanks placed on the roof top of the hostels are uncovered and these tanks are filled with dust and filth and most interestingly birds and monkeys drink water from the water tanks but administration of the hospital has never sent anyone to clean the tanks and cover them so that students don't fell ill and consider only on their studies. However, the numbers of complaints and a delegation met with senior authority of the hospital but all in vein and they showed callous attitude to students who are staying in the hostel from for flung areas to complete their studies. |
