After opposing KPs' return, NC praises pro-Pak Mirwaiz | Shers turn Bakras | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 22: Kashmir's main opposition National Conference has once again become a laughing stock in the entire political spectrum here as it observed the anniversary of the separatist leader late Mirwaiz Farooq at the party office. Mirwaiz Farooq, the father of the Huriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar, was assassinated in 1990 and since then, Hurriyat calls for the valley wide shutdown to mark his death anniversary every year. Mirwaiz Farooq, a staunch Pakistan supporter who advocated state's merger with Pakistan, at the onset of militancy in Kashmir, was killed at his Nigeen residence on May 21, 1990. The infighting between the two militant groups in Kashmir in 1990, as per the reports, led to Mirwaiz Farooq's assassination. Mirwaiz who had the backing of militant outfit Al-Umar was critical of the policies of another militant outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. The security agencies operating in valley during militancy's peak period maintained that it was the Hizb commander Abdullah Bangroo who was behind Mirwaiz Farooq's killing. Pertinently, both Mirwaiz Farooq and Abdullah Bangroo are buried in same graveyard. Meanwhile, opposition National Conference which witnessed the worst ever rout during the 2014 polls, is making every attempt to come into public eye. It has been openly supporting separatists, opposing return of the Kashmiri Pandits and icing on the cake was witnessed on Saturday when its leaders dressed in white salwar suits and waistcoats commemorated the 26th death anniversary of the separatist leader Mirwaiz Farooq. It's in place to mention here that there was great animosity between NC supporters and supporters of late Mirwaiz before the onset of militancy in Kashmir. The NC supporters were called Shers (Lions) and supporters of late Mirwaiz were known as Bakras (sheep) and both the groups used to clash with each other quite often. Sher-Bakra rivalry also finds mention in history books. The leaders eulogized Mirwaiz's role, hailed his every political move and termed him the 'great leader Kashmir has ever produced'. "Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq was an exemplary religious scholar and a committed social reformer whose role in politics was significant and was aimed at the welfare of his people. In his assassination, Kashmir lost a popular religious figure and an astute political mind," the NC leaders present in the meeting said. Besides the Srinagar district president, Provincial president youth, several former ministers and legislators were present during the function. What is more ironic is that while trying to gain the public attention, NC forgot that it is the mainstream party of the state, fighting for the restoration of the democratic institutions and reaffirming peoples' faith in the institutions of justice and fairplay. Also, it was the NC founder Sheikh Abdullah who during his entire life time rigorously campaigned against the Mirwaiz family. In his autobiography- Aatish-e-Chinar or the Blazing Chinar, Sheikh Abdullah describes in detail the political differences that he had with the Mirwaiz family. Though the function held by NC on Saturday proved counterproductive to it as it invited brickbats from public, the party continues to remain in no mood to learn from its mistakes. It remains to be seen what is in the offing next as the chances of NC coming to power again in the state are so meagre at present. |
