Separatists out to destabilize Govt, ruin tourist season | Separate colonies for KPs | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 22: The issue of setting up separate colonies in the Valley for migrant Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave the Valley in 1990, has put the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a tight spot as its coalition partner BJP is keen on devising a plan to set up these townships without any delay. On the other hand separatists see it as an opportunity to foment trouble in the restive Valley so that they can appease their bosses sitting across the Line of Control. "This time around the so-called JKLF Chief Yasin Malik has taken the lead and is trying to build the consensus among the separatists that they should evolve a joint strategy and issue a protest calendar to counter the government's proposed move," sources told Early Times. They said, "Hurriyat dove Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has started dancing to the tunes of Malik and his recent statements asking youth to get ready for 2010 like agitation are an ample proof of it." On the other hand Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani has assured Malik of all possible support and is believed to have given his "ashirwaad" to Malik to go all out to make the separatists relevant once again. The PDP which is heading the coalition tried to douse the flames recently by claiming that no "exclusive townships" would be set up for displaced Kashmiri Pandits and the government is open to suggestions. "The PDP has succumbed to pressure and wants to keep everyone in good books. Now it remains to be seen whether the BJP would persuade the cause of Kashmiri Pandits or it would go with PDP over the issue," said an analyst. Sources said, "Police have received the inputs that separatists have joined hands and are in the process of activating their henchmen who can orchestrate street protests and foment trouble in Kashmir so that normal life is disrupted and a message is sent to one and all that separatists still call the shots." Insiders claimed, "Separatists are under pressure from their handlers across the LoC to utilize the opportunity to set Kashmir on fire." Police sources said, "We are maintaining a strict vigil over the activities of separatists and their aides, who can help them in executing their nefarious plans. All out efforts are being put to vitiate peace and for that separatists are seeking each other's cooperation." They claimed a few mainstream parties too are interested in fomenting trouble and are in touch with the separatists through back channels. However, separatists fear backlash from the people who in the recent past have not shown any inclination towards violence and shutdown calls. "The May 21 shutdown and Eidgah chalo call left the Hurriyat dove Mirwaiz Umar Farooq red faced as it didn't evoke any response from the people," said a police official. He said, "Separatists are leaving no stone unturned to provoke the people but masses not giving any response has left them high and dry." |
