Thin bus service on Srinagar's major roads irks commuters | | | Saqib Junaid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 29: The shortage of private transport service in the summer capital of the State mocks at the government tall claims of having improved the public transport facility. The passengers complain that hardly a mini bus plies on Pantha Chowk to JVC Bemina Highway after an hour. "There are low numbers of buses plying on the Parimpora to Pantha chowk Highway due to which I could not reach to Nowgam Railway station on time and missed the train," said a person from Banihal. Pertinently many important Government offices including Nowgam railway Station, State Board of School Education (JKBOSE), Srinagar Development Authority (SDA), Govt Polytechnic Women's College, SKIMS Medical College hospital, Town planning Organization and Hajj house falls on this route. The employees working in different departments falling on this track could not reach to their respective offices in time. Many complainants said that they have to change at-least twice and even walk some distance in-between to reach their destinations. "I have to walk more than 2 kilometers on foot between Tengpora and Bemina area of Srinagar City to reach the office. As the buses are fully over crowded," said an employee of Srinagar Development Authority Office at Bemina. While those who find it odd to be treated like cattle often get into scuffle with the drivers. "This is a routine affair for us despite daily heated arguments with bus drivers," said Bashir Ahmad Shirazi a passenger. Meanwhile the pushing and pulling, trampling over feet and squeezing on seats all these issues had become a daily routine for people, especially the working folk and students due to shortage of bus service on old airport Rangreth to Jehangir Chowk Stretch. Working women and students who travel on this route on everyday basis alleged that some miscreants try to sexually harass women by touching physically. They had to face a tough time travelling in local buses. As per the commuters, the buses are overloaded to the extent that passengers cannot even breathe properly and if overloading was not enough, the buses drive at "snail's pace". "Due to the shortage of buses we have no other option left other than to travel in overcrowded buses we cannot raise a voice against such issues as we fear that we may get stigmatized. As there is no other option other than to bear it silently," said a group of students studying in Govt. Women's College Srinagar. While the commuters working in private organizations alleged that the bus service on most of the route goes off by around7:00 PM in the evening and they face acute hardships in reaching their destinations. The poor service contradicts the government plans of promoting buses especially for women Folks in the Srinagar City. Despite attempts RTO Kashmir could not be contacted for comments. |
