Jammu's agitation produced desired results | AIIMS in Jammu | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 29: The people of Jammu province once again established that they have the power to bring the authorities on their knees and obtain what they want. The case in point is the May 27 decision of the Union Government to set up two AIIMS in the state, one each in Jammu province and Kashmir region. Had the people of Jammu region not agitated for more than two months and had the Jammu's civil society none come on to the roads after the BJP surrendered AIIMS to Kashmir through the agenda of alliance, Jammu would not have got the sanctioned AIIMS. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had in his budget speech in the Lok Sabha on February 28, 2015 announced an AIIMS for Jammu, but the very next day the people of Jammu province were shocked to know that the AIIMS had been shifted to Kashmir. The decision to shift the sanctioned AIIMS for Jammu to Kashmir had caused a sort of furore in Jammu. However, it was afterApril 19 that the Jammu province was actually gripped by anger. That day, the state government in Jammu announced that AIIMS will be established in Kashmir and Artificial Tawi Lake could also be shelved on technical and financial grounds. The announcement added to the anger to the extent that people of Jammu province observed complete bandh on April 24. Between April 24 and July, Jammu witnessed a number of bandhs, demonstrations, protest marches, hunger strike and anti-BJP rallies. The people of the province accused the BJP of betraying them and surrendering everything to Kashmir. The rest is history. The decision of the Union Government to set up two AIIMS in the state is a great victory of the people of Jammu province and it proves that they have the ability and capability to achieve what they want. Earlier, they had brought the authorities to their knees and forced them to establish Jammu University, Medical College, Engineering College, Mata Vaishno Devi University, Agriculture University, Central University Jammu, to mention only a few. They got these institutions despite the negative attitude of the authorities. It would not be out of place to mention here that one senior BJP leader had admitted that "had the people of Jammu province not launched an agitation against the BJP, they would not have got AIIMS". He was right. People of Jammu province deserve kudos for their remarkable victory. |
