Our Govt doesn't know how many KPs are in Kashmir, how many migrated | Facts mock at JK's successive regimes over ending plight of pandits | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report Srinagar, May 29: The non- serious approach of the previous regimes in Jammu and Kashmir has made the issue of return of the Kashmiri pandits more messy and chaotic with government having no information over the actual number of KPs who migrated and those who want to return. As the political parties in the state at present are busy scoring the political points by raising the issues related to the return of the KPs to their homeland, not even a meagre attention is being paid over compiling the factually correct data about the total number of KPs who migrated from valley at the onset of militancy and how many of them have return or want to return. What unmasked the non-serious approach by the helmsmen in the state over the turbulence being faced by the KPs was the reply of the relief and rehabilitation minister in the state legislative assembly. According to the government, it has no information about the total number of KPs who have returned to their native places. Further the government admitted that it has no details about the all sort of assistance provided to them for their rehabilitation. Furthermore, the government of Jammu and Kashmir doesn't know what is the number of pandit families who have not migrated from their native places in Kashmir valley at the onset of militancy. Meanwhile, the government admittance to such a startling revelation has once again caused stir in the public domain with people coming to know how serious were the successive regimes of the state to bring back the KPs. Though there is war of words being witnessed between the opposition national conference and ruling PDP over the return of the pandits to their homeland, the efforts made in the past were so meagre that reflection of the sorry state of affairs becomes evident and clear. The government in the lower house further stated that it has been asked by the Government of India to approve the construction of additional 6000 Transit Accommodations for migrant Pandits who are in the government service in Kashmir Valley. The government said they have also been asked to create additional 3000 jobs for migrant Pandit youth for which, they said, the process is efforts are on. The government said that under the package of Rs 1618.40 cr sanctioned in 2008-9, the assistance of Rs 7.5 lakh each is being provided to those who intend to return back to their native places. For those migrants who couldn't return to their native places because of some reasons, the controversial housing colonies (Pandit townships) have been proposed to be constructed in certain areas of Kashmir, the government said. Under the package, the Pandits will also be provided a one-time grant for the revival of their agriculture & horticulture land in Valley. During this period they will continue to receive the financial assistance and scholarships for their school going children. The Pandits are currently being provided monthly cash assistance of Rs 2500 per person monthly subject to a maximum of Rs 10,000 per family. |
