Poppy cultivation continues as drug addiction increases in Valley | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 31: With drug addiction taking its toll on younger generation in Kashmir valley, 'poppy' (afeem) cultivation which is on its 'pinnacle' at central Ganderbal has become an easy source of income for its populace. If sources are to be believed poppy cultivation which is punishable under law is preferred by locals to grow on agricultural land spread over hundreds of kanals at Nunner, Serch, Gutlibagh, Wurpush and adjoining villages in Ganderbal district. Sources said that the poppy cultivation has become an easy source of income for Ganderbal populace which they claimed is being exported to international market against crores of rupees after its ripening. ''People here have forgotten about agricultural activities as they prefer to cultivate poppy (afeem) against rice and mustard, poppy is now being grown in the kitchen-gardens as well with authorities seemingly undaunted over the issue," sources told 'Early Times'. Sources said that more than 15,000 kanals of land is under the cultivation of poppy, bhang and cannabis in five villages of Ganderbal. Most of the poppy cultivation is undertaken on the agricultural land which has been converted illegally into poppy growing tracts. When contacted Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganderbal, Imtiyaz Ismael Parray preferred to remain silent over the issue while SHO Ganderbal, Asif Iqbal helplessly said he is not authorized to comment better to contact SP. The geographical location of Jammu and Kashmir makes transit of drugs possible across the state. The establishment of Jammu as one of the main transit points for smuggling heroin and acetyl anhydride is a reflection of the dangerous developments. Many areas of south Kashmir have since decades been a source of cannabis cultivation for producing charas (hashish) with crores of rupees worth of it smuggled to the international market. The cannabis cultivation is getting meta-morphed into more lucrative opium poppy cultivation under the patronage of major national and international drug mafia. "The way people use to grow poppy hashish and other poison on their land is taking toll on younger generation who use the same as a desired drug against thousands of rupees a day. People under the noose of police use to grow poppy in their fields with no firm action taken against the illegal cultivation," they said. |
