2 LeT militants killed in Pulwama encounter | 2016 registered increase in killing of militants by over 110 pc | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, June 30: Two local militants of the banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terror outfit were today killed by security forces in an encounter in Neva area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Army spokesman, Col N N Joshi said in yet another major blow to the terror outfits, security forces eliminated two LeT militants in a swift encounter that erupted this morning in Malwar village near Neva- Zudura area of Pulwama. He said that based on specific inputs regarding the presence of militants in Malwar village, an operation was launched by army and police in the morning. As army commenced the search of the suspected house, a heavy volume of fire was opened by the terrorists hiding inside the house. The forces retaliated, following which a gun battle ensued. "Security forces cordoned off the house to prevent escape of the terrorists. At about 10am, while making an attempt to escape, both the terrorists were gunned down by the forces,"Col Joshi said. The slain militants were identified as Ayoub lone of lelhar Kakpora and Manzoor of Gandibagh, Kakapora. Police sources said one of two slain militants was part of the Pampore attack in which eight CRPF men were killed while 20 others sustained injuries. Sources said the operation was called off after a thorough search of the area and the bodies of the killed militants were handed over to police along with the weapons recovered from them. Sources said while the operation was in progress, locals had tried to distract the forces to ensure that the holed up militants were able to escpae from there. Police had used tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who threw stones on them. Army has already issued an advisory for general public asking people not to move towards encounter sites and pelt stones on security forces who remain engaged in eliminating militants. An official statement issued today regarding security situation in the state reads that "due to active engagement of security forces/police with the militants, the year 2016 has registered an increase in the killing of militants by over 110 per cent and arrest of militants and suspects by 48 per cent and a drop in civilian killings by 11 per cent as compared to corresponding period of 2015." |
