BJP has forfeited right to criticize Cong | News Analysis | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 23: J&K BJP has taken an exception to Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram's recent demand seeking greater autonomy for Kashmir on the ground that it has unique history, unique geography, unique culture and unique religion. Chidambaram had (wrongly) advocated restoring the "grand bargain" under which Kashmir acceded to India by granting a large degree of autonomy, warning that otherwise the country will have to pay a "heavy price". The BJP has termed the demand dangerous and anti-India, anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh. "Kashmir region constituted merely about 15 per cent (read a little over 11 per cent) area of the state and its population was less than 50 per cent of the state's population. The people of the Jammu and Ladakh regions were against granting any autonomy to the state, instead they were pleading for removal of Article 370. They considered it as a hindrance to the progress and development of the state and for bringing the people of Kashmir into the national mainstream. This article had contributed to the alienation of the people of the state… even in the Valley, 45 per cent population was of Gujjar Bakkarwals and Shia Muslims," the BJP through its spokesperson said the other day in a press release, adding that the "Chidambaram formula was dangerous for integrity of the country and could have serious repercussions". Notwithstanding the fact that the BJP took a right stand on the Chidambaram's highly unsettling demand and his wrong assertion that J&K acceded to India as per a "grand bargain", the BJP willfully committed a faux pas or political hara-kiri by saying what it said against Chidambaram. Perhaps, the J&K BJP thought that it would mislead the nationalists in J&K by taking a stand against Article 370 and greater autonomy. The BJP, in fact, again told a lie under the misguided notion that the nationalists would take the BJP's views on their face value and forgive it for the acts of betrayal it committed against its own constituency in Jammu, as also against the nation as a whole. The people of Jammu province and Ladakh region, besides the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, refugees from Pakistan and POJK, know it well that the BJP came into power in J&K only after throwing into dustbin its ideology and after holding out a commitment that it will not only not touch Article 370 but would allow the PDP to go beyond it. And it made this commitment in writing and late Mufti Sayeed made it loud and clear on March 1, 2015, when he assumed the charge in Jammu and made public the terms and conditions under which the PDP stitched alliance with the BJP. The BJP has lost the moral and political authority to criticize the Congress or any other political party which vouches for greater autonomy for the state. |
