Ahead of Hurriyat's Anantnag Chalo call, Govt 'hires' services of former police official | | | Hyder Ali
Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 23: Even as the authorities struggle to overcome ongoing unrest in Kashmir, the state government has "hired services" a former police official to bring situation under control. While the Hurriyat Conference has called for Anantnag Chalo on July 25, the former police official is already stationed in the south Kashmir district. He is understood to be putting up and operating from a police-office in the town, often seen as ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)'s stronghold. Sources said the former cop assisted the government in facilitating Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's meeting with some of the bereaved on July 21. Witnesses said he was seen at the police mess from where he is operating. Sources said the former police official discovered through his "ground contacts" that some of the bereaved were "distant relatives" of a minister. The government subsequently persuaded the families to meet the chief minister for the condolence meeting. Sources said ahead of leaving for Anantnag, the former official held a detailed meeting with some ministers from the ruling PDP. "He equally shared some mantras of smart policing with the incumbent officials in the testing times," said a source privy to the development. "Initially, he would share tips on phone but as things failed to improve, it was formally resolved that he be sent to restive Anantnag for restoration of peace," the insiders said. The former police official is seen as close to some senior PDP leaders, who vouched for him as "advisor to government in the testing times." In 2010, as a then Senior Superintendent of Police, he played a crucial role in dousing the unrest in summer that year, when around 120 people died in street protests. Even though the official proved a "blessing" for Omar Abdullah government in restoration of peace, his prospects of promotion were allegedly "never supported" by the then National Conference led government, which took him as a "PDP man". Surprising though, the official finally got promoted in December 2015 after his retirement from the government services, when the PDP came to power with Mufti Muhammad Sayeed as Chief Minister. He subsequently retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police. Known for his "contacts with the grassroots", insiders said, the former cop continues to maintain his "source network" even after his retirement from the services. Sources said the state government was impressed by his experience in combating militancy and restoration of law and order, something which seemingly prompted the concerned to depute him to south Kashmir, strategically important district for the coalition government. Officials however feigned ignorance about the issue. "We have no such information of his being there," they said. Repeated attempts to contact the former cop didn't bear fruit.
