No PET in 75 Govt schools but students pay for sports activities | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 23: Even as 75 government schools in Jammu district are without physical education teachers (PETs), the students there have surprisingly been paying for the sports activities which are 'non-existent' in their institutions. This exposes the tall claims of the government and the department of sports to promote sports activities among students across the state. Sources in the Department of Youth Services and Sports informed Early Times that Jammu district 'has a total of 14 educational zones and 265 sanctioned posts of PETs, but astoundingly 75 posts in schools on the city outskirts are lying vacant for the past few years'. "For the sports activities, which are allegedly not undertaken in their schools in the absence of PETs, the students, who mostly belong to poor families, are forced to pay annual charges," sources alleged. "The government also admits that 40 per cent of its schools in the state are without electricity, 20 per cent are without library facility and 75 per cent are without computer and internet facilities but the fee was being charged from the students every year," sources alleged, adding that if the government unable to provide such facilities to these schools, it should not charge from the students. When contacted, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jammu, Sukhdev Singh said that a couple of months back, the department had promoted PETs to Physical Masters but the vacant posts of PETs were yet to be filled. He said he had already taken up the matter with the higher authorities and hoped that the matter would be sorted out within a month. However, despite repeated phone calls, the Director General of Youth Services and Sports, Jehangir Mir didn't respond. |
