New Delhi may hand over Kashmir to Army | News Analysis | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 9: Signals emanating from New Delhi suggest that the worried authorities might hand over the disturbed and militant-infested Kashmir to the Army for some time. Reports appear credible given the fact that on Monday Sopore was virtually handed over to the Army. What transpired during the meeting of the Union Home Minister, Defence Minister, Union Home Secretary, National Security Advisor and others was not something ordinary; it was a serious exercise undertaken to review the prevailing situation and discuss ways and means aimed at bringing normalcy back to the Valley. Reports suggest during the meeting, various options were mulled and their implications were discussed. The meeting assumed importance because J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was also there in New Delhi for the first time after July 8, when Kashmir was gripped by a new phase of violent movement. She also discussed the Kashmir situation with the Union Home Minister and according to reports, she insisted on dialogue with what she called "all stakeholders", as also on Vajpayee-like-dialogue process. It is still known what response she evoked from the Home Minister. Things would become clear in a day or two. Meanwhile, many think tanks have started mounting pressure on New Delhi and their objective is to convince the authorities of the need to hand over Kashmir to the Army for some time. Their view is that the state police has failed to rise to the situation, that the CRPF is not trained to face such situations and that the Army rule is the only option. The situation in Kashmir is critical. A drastic action is the need of the hour. Any failure on the part of New Delhi would further complicate the already rather complicated situation in the Valley, which today virtually stands Talibanized. |
