Renovation of Darbargarh: Too little too late? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 9: The initiatives of the previous governments to renovate and refurbish the remains of Mubarak Mandi Complex, what was once the seat of power of Dogra regime and represented the rich heritage and grandeur of Dogra kings have fallen flat as years after they took off, they have yielded little result and loads of misery. Nine years since the work began on the complex, restoration work on only a part of the complex has been done while the inconvenience caused to the people living in the vicinity has been enormous. Heaps of garbage, dumps of building material and unwarranted barricading of the complex have caused untold misery to the locals. Work on Darbargarh Palace, Jammuites share an emotional bonding with, has been hit by serious resource crunch and state government has not been able to prevail upon the Centre to release funds for its early completion. Started in year 2007, Archeological Survey of India has been working at snail's pace. The project was taken in hand in 13th Finance Commission and an estimate of Rs 53.9crore was projected for its restoration. Out of which, Rs 15 crore were sanctioned by Central Government so far but only Rs 8.57 crore were released, sources disclosed. The renovation work itself has been marred by controversy as the committee constituted for the renovation on its own had invited expression of interest for converting the complex into a 5-star hotel. The idea had evoked a huge public outcry following which the committee had to put its foot in the mouth. Many believe that the decay of this remarkable piece of heritage was carried out through a well hatched conspiracy by the Kashmir centric polity, who converted this complex which should have been painstakingly conserved into public offices of the government. Further, a mysterious fire that engulfed a major portion of the complex and razed magnificent signs of heritage to ground for ever. People residing in the area resent the snail's pace at which the renovation work is going. "It would take decades to complete this work if it continued at this pace and the present generation would not be able to witness the magnificent Durbargarh in its renovated avatar" said a local. |
