As legislators go in hibernation, militants make public appearances in Valley | Since Burhan Wani's killing, armed militants address 4 public rallies in South Kashmir | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 21: The reign of 1990 has returned in volatile south Kashmir region of this northern state with militants making public appearances, addressing rallies and displaying arms while vowing to continue their fight. On Friday, August 19, when the government had clamped down strict curfew across various districts of valley, four militants with faces covered with black colour masks and donning green aprons with 'Pakistan Zindabad' inscribed in urdu, made a public appearance and addressed a rally in South Kashmir's Kaimoh hamlet. Since the killing of the Hizb Commander Burhan Wani on July 8, the militants, hailing from various pak sponsored ultra outfits, have addressed people at several public rallies in South Kashmir. Such a trend has turned out to be a cause of concern for the security grid that so far was of the opinion that militancy has died down in Kashmir valley at large. None other than the most wanted militant leader Hafiz Saeed in Pakistan recently, admitted in open that the commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit led Burhan's funeral procession in Tral on July 9, this year. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC-in-C) of Army's Udhampur-based Northern Headquarters, Lt General D S Hooda during a press conference here on Friday termed the presence of militants in public rallies a matter of concern. "It's a fact that our counter-insurgency operations in South Kashmir got a hit. In North Kashmir, we carried out anti-militancy operations. We have decided to re-start our operations against militants in South Kashmir," he said. According to reports, there were atleast four instances when militants out in open have addressed the people in south Kashmir- already being considered as present militancy's 'hot- bed'. On August 1, this year, Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, Abu Dujana, wearing a mask, attended a protest gathering at a "martyrs' cemetery" in Karimabad, Pulwama. Dujana is considered by security agencies to be the mastermind behind several attacks, such as the one on a CRPF convoy at Pampore and another at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute in the Sempora area this year. On August 2, two unidentified militants surfaced at a rally in the Koimoh area of Kulgam district. They warned the gathering not to inform police and other security agencies about the whereabouts of militants On August 3, three unidentified militants, with their faces covered, appeared during a rally at Arwani in Anantnag district's Bijbehara, where they exhorted the gathering to "follow and obey" the programme advocated by separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik. The security grid, according to the highly placed sources, has expressed strong concern over the change in trend on ground with protestors being directly instigated to take extreme steps by the militants. "The militants till now had confined their activities underground. There would not be a single instance found in the past where any militant has addressed the people out in open. The present trend has to be stopped," sources said. |
