| 'GMC Principal wants wanton powers to play dictator' | | | Nitesh Sangral

Jammu, Aug 21: Virtually upset over alleged "notoriety" gained in past few months due to alleged misdeeds, the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu is reportedly in process of becoming a "dictator", for which he wants 'wanton powers' of debarring students from the College, invoking ban on their democratic activities and even ruining their career, junior doctors have alleged.
However, the GMC administration claimed that the proposed steps have been taken, keeping in view the patient care as well as smooth functioning of GMCH Jammu and its associated hospitals and emergency services.
On Saturday, the administration of GMC&H and its associated called a meeting in the premises of GMC and discussed various issues regarding strike by junior doctors and smooth functioning of the hospital and its associated hospitals.
The copy of minutes of meetings reads as, "administratively ban may be invoked against any such illegal activity uncalled for strikes by Junior doctors, Suo-motto powers may be granted by the college Council to Principal/Dean to correspond with Vice Chancellor University of Jammu to seek authorization by Principal/Dean to have the power to debar any Post Graduate student on the recommendations of respective HOD for 6 months in case they indulge in any illegal/un lawful; strike and third one is introducing in the experience certificate provision of adding one sentence that the said doctors was not or was involved in any demonstration or illegal strike during the tenure.
Such recommendations have virtually put a question mark on democratic rights granted by constitution and rulebook of the institution.
Slamming the callous attitude of administration of GMC&H for its failure to solve and meet the needs of working junior doctors in these hospitals, a group of junior doctors wishing anonymity said, "We are living in democratic country and like others people of the country-Constitution of India grants right to every citizen of the India for it-- to raise their issues by holding peaceful protest but it seems the Principal is in process of becoming dictator by issuing above said three recommendations".
They further said that they were deeply pained by the inconvenience meted out the patients due to strike. "But we had not gone on strike willingly but were compelled to do so due to treatment of higher ups, "they said.
Have we got no rights to raise our problems like other common citizens raise?. Are there different laws and rules for us and for common man?, said angry doctors. "Why GMC administration is making its own rules by ignoring our genuine demands. Before going on strike, we approached the administration but it did not pay any heed towards our pleas," they alleged, adding that higher officials and government should take action against the administration for such acts.
Though, officials of the hospital claimed that the steps are being taken to streamline the functioning of hospital and college, so that patients care in future will not be hit.
Junior doctors have to understand that the strike always affects patient care and patients have to move to other hospitals. As we are government employees, we have to obey rules and regulations of the hospital strictly so that better health care facilities can be provided to poor patients, a senior official claimed. |
