Thupstan raises banner of revolt, asks high command to repeal Art 370 | UT is Ladakh's goal | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 29: Finally, BJP MP from Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang has opened his mouth. He has said Ladakhis cannot co-exist with separatist and communal Kashmiri Muslim leadership. He has not just asked the party high command to repeal Article 370 within a definite period and demanded Union Territory status for Ladakh but also told the high command that Ladakh needed to be separated from Kashmir for security reasons. It shows that anger is brewing in Ladakh against the Kashmiri politics of secessionism and communalism, as also against the New Delhi's Kashmir policy. This demand for UT and abrogation of Article 370 came as New Delhi struggles to defuse the violent situation and crisis in the Valley. Indeed, what has aggravated the situation in Ladakh is the violent agitation in the aftermath of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani's death on July 8. The BJP government at the Centre must set a deadline for abrogation of Article 370, the people of Ladakh say. "An attempt is being made to form a coalition of all political parties in Ladakh to form a front that would push for UT status," Thupstan Chhewang reportedly said on Sunday, and added that "the Congress also supports the demand". Thupstan Chhewang also said that he will raise the issue at the forthcoming national executive of the party in Kerala and tell the party high command that "people are worried that the unrest will spill over to Ladakh". "Ladakh's demand for UT status, with a separate legislative, should be met, keeping in view the security of the region that shares a border with China," he further said to make his point clear. Chhewang is former chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC). He won the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat on the BJP ticket in 2014. The demand for UT and abrogation of Article 370 is not a new demand; it is almost 70 year old. The demand is genuine and well-founded and it needed to be considered. Similarly, Jammu also needs a separate dispensation as the problem it faces are similar. In fact, Jammu has suffered more. As far as Kashmiri Hindus are concerned, they have already made it clear that they will not accept any solution that doesn't set up a separate homeland for them in the Valley invested with UT status. |
