Senior cops hold informal chat with separatist leader | Govt to start 'Track -2 talks' with Mirwaiz | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 29: The government is all set to start "Track 2" talks with senior separatist leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who heads the moderate, Hurriyat Conference (M), for restoration of normalcy in Kashmir. Sources in the Home ministry told Early Times that Mirwaiz has been deliberately detained at the Cheshma Shahi hut to "set stage for holding of track-2 talks with the Hurriyat leadership." Sources said some senior officials of the Jammu and Kashmir Police have already had a round of "informal chat" with the separatist leadership. "Some of the senior officials spoke to him on phone whereas others visited his hut, where the discussion was held in cordial manner in the guest room," sources said. Sources said Mirwaiz was being given VIP treatment, and that a doctor also visited him to know about his well-being. The doctor, as per insiders, was escorted by police, including a senior official. "Though this all is being done informally but every effort is aimed at persuading him for formal dialogue so that the stalemate ends and normalcy is restored in violence-marred Kashmir," said a source asking not to be identified. Sources said New Delhi was keen to speak to Mirwaiz ahead of any formal talks with the separatist leaders to see their seriousness towards restoration of normalcy in the Valley, on the boil since July 8 when militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two associates were killed. Official sources said the central government is forming a special team to start a dialogue in Kashmir through informal channels and help resolve the crisis that has crippled the state for over 50 days now. The central government has started reaching out to eminent citizens to be part of the "Track 2 team", which could be tasked with talking to all stakeholders including separatists. The team is likely to be announced when an all-party delegation visits Kashmir next weekend. The issuance of calendar by the separatists has emerged a main worry for the government struggling to restore normalcy in the Valley. "Our first demand to the Hurriyat leadership will be to break the protest calendar, which has emerged a cause of violence in the Valley," said a source. Pertinently, though the government claims to have kept Mirwaiz at "sub jail", in reality he is putting up in one of the most luxurious huts in the picturesque locale on the heels of Zaberwan Hills. |
