Farmers allege on Agricultural deptt to provide sub-standard seeds | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Sept 7: Farmers hailing from Border areas of village Haria Chak, Gopala Chak, Khilo Chak, Devo Chak and many adjoining areas today assembled in main town and staged protest against Agricultural department alleging to provide sub-standard seeds of 834 Variety of rice during sowing season. Raising slogans against agricultural department, farmers took to the streets against the supply of sub-standard variety of blended seeds. "Blended seeds apparently have compounded sufferings of farmers who are confused as crops in some areas of fields have matured while other yet has to ripe, some said, adding, " they (farmers) are in dilemma of what to do or not to do with this 'paddy crops.'. A farmer Ashok Kumar said that union government though has made claim to strengthening agricultural sector but the concerned department openly made fraud and provide sub-standard paddy seeds of 834 variety of rice. He said, "Pakistan rangers target only public but agricultural department has targeted the financial /economic status of farmers by procuring sub standard seeds which directly has hit the livelihood of the poor farmers who already are under the burden of Kissan Credit Card (KCC) loans. Ashok Kumar and other farmers rued due to alleged sub standard and blended seeds the farmers are in fix as half of the paddy crop has matured while rest is in pre matured stage. Bishan Dass, another farmer said that farmers are already affected due to incessant rains in previous years, loan and lack of facilities provided to farmers but they would not bear this fraud made by agricultural officers. Protestors were demanding inquiry in this case as despite number of deputations have called on agricultural officials but they just hit about the bushes. Some concerned officials even have passed the blame to Head Office Jammu. "And when farmers approached their the officials at head office of Agricultural Department at Jammu they too shifted blame on Delhi office saying they received seeds from Delhi. Meanwhile agitated protesters demanded compensation from loss to the crop and inquiry against agricultural officers who had purchased sub-standard seeds from private firm and the same was sold to poor farmers at exorbitant rates but their crops had failed due to the poor quality of seeds. |
