Officials swindle ration taking advantage of Kashmir unrest | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 7: The Crime Branch (CB) of police today unearthed a major ration scam at Pulwama during surprise inspection of godowns and offices of the department of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs. "During a series of raids conducted today, it was found that ration worth crores of rupees has been black-marketed by some officials, taking undue advantage of prevailing situation in the valley," a CB spokesman said. He said the CB sleuths conducted extensive raids in Awantipora and Pulwama areas Tuesday last. During the inspection of records, it was found that ration meant for BPL card holders under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Food Entitlement Scheme (MMSFES) had been grossly misappropriated allegedly by the officials of the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs as well as dealers and operators in connivance with black-marketeers. The spokesman said the CB inspection revealed that ration distribution was made on papers, but actually no ration was distributed among the rationees in the areas. It was found that various officials of FCS&CA Department in league with each other had misappropriated hundreds of quintals of ration showing it as being distributed among the families without any actual distribution from the depots and shops," the spokesman said, adding that the ration so misappropriated was sold in open market at exorbitant rates, taking undue advantage of the Kashmir unrest. A group of officials was also alleged to created artificial scarcity of ration. He said the physical check of supplies in the Pulwama district granary in the presence of magistrates also revealed excess quantity of 45 quintals of rice against the actual balance. It was stored illegally for its sale in the black market. "The concerned officials fled the scene sensing trouble and have been summoned to associate with the probe which is underway," he said, adding that there was likelihood of similar frauds in other districts as well. The spokesman said an in-depth investigation into the misappropriation of ration, its pilferage and black-marketing had been initiated by CB. "Further investigations are underway to ascertain the losses incurred to the state exchequer and actual amount of pilferage enabling the agency to fix responsibility and initiate action against the culprits," he added. |
