Three years on, SWD denies scholarships to over 80 SC, ST students | | | G S Asgotra Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 16: Call it negligence or deliberate attempt of the officials of Social Welfare Department (SWD) towards lower strata of society that nearly 80 students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes who passed their B. Ed examination in 2014 are still not getting their scholarships after lapse of three years. These socially deprived students were enrolled in NGM, College of Education, Dhinde Kalan, RS Pura, for Bachelor Degree in Education (B.Ed) in 2013 and completed their degree in 2014, in the same year, they also applied for the scholarships. "Ironically, after completion of three years, they have not got a single penny in terms of scholarships, and every time they visited Social Welfare Department (SWD), the officials made lame excuse over release of scholarships", said Sushil Kumar, who recently completed his degree in Mass Communication from Central University of Jammu. Expressing his plight, Sushil further said that despite the commitment of Union as well as state governments towards upliftment of socially deprived class, nothing has been done as a result of which, majority of the students have not been perusing further education. "I am an average student, among the five friends who joined B.Ed course in 2013. No-doubt, they were brilliant but not pursuing their post gradation in any subject after being shortlisted in both Jammu University and Central University because, they have no money to get the admission", said Sushil Kumar. "All the money had been spent by them to take the admission in B.Ed courses. If the department had released their scholarship in time, definitely they would have completed their post graduation" he added. It is pertinent to mention here that as per set guidelines, the scholarship fee should be released before the end of session, so that, the students could bear everyday expenses but due to indifferent attitude of officials of the department, the student are running pillar to post to get their scholarships . There are so many SC & ST students who couldn't pursue higher education, owing to dearth of money. If they were given scholarship by SWD in-time, the scenario perhaps could have been different", said an official wishing anonymity. When contacted, Director Social welfare Department, Virjee Hangloo said that most of the scholarships have been distributed among the students, but if someone is left, they can contact us and within days, it would definitely be released. |
