Karra's resignation has serious implications | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 16: The co-founder of PDP Tariq Hamid Karra on Thursday resigned from the party and from the Lok Sabha, alleging that the PDP was instrumental in enabling RSS to implement its agenda in Kashmir and terming the Modi's India as the replica of Nazi Germany. India under Narendra Modi has become intolerant, he said. Karra said many things and most of his statements were directed against the PDP. "The PDP had sought and got votes from Kashmir on the anti-BJP and anti-RSS planks. The PDP had asked the Kashmiri people to see to it that not a single BJP candidate wins in Kashmir. The people of Kashmir ensured the defeat of all the BJP candidates, but the PDP forged an alliance with the same BJP against which it had fought," he said while resigning from the party. Reacting to his resignation, PDP MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig said "when a senior leader leaves the party, it has its impact". In other words, he opined that the resignation of Karra from the party was not a good development and that his action may adversely impact the party itself. Of course, he also said "it is too early to assess the damage his resignation would cause". The charges which Karra leveled against the PDP and the state government were very serious and the manner in which he leveled those charges was all the more significant. He, in fact, used the opportunity to arouse popular passions not only against the Government of India but also against the state government. He held the state government responsible for the current unrest in the Valley. The fact of the matter is that Karra sought to tell the Kashmiri people that the PDP entered into an unholy alliance with the BJP for the sake of power and abandoned the ideology it had adopted in July 1999, when the PDP was formed. He used the opportunity to appeal to all the MPs, all the MLAs and all the MLCs to see the writing on the wall and follow a path that assuages the feelings of the outraged Kashmiris. In fact, he indirectly asked the lawmakers to resign so that the PDP-BJP government collapsed. One cannot say at this point in time how many MLAs and MLCs will follow suit or adopt the line Karra adopted on Thursday, but one can say with confidence that his resignation has created a piquant situation for other lawmakers in the Kashmir Valley, especially those belonging to the PDP. There are reports that there are a number of PDP lawmakers who, like Karra, believe that the alliance with the BJP has harmed the PDP more than the BJP and that if the party leadership didn't snap ties with the BJP, the results could be disastrous for the party. That the resignation of Karra at this point in time was construed a major setback or a major political development in the already turbulent Kashmir could be seen from the fact that CM Mehbooba Mufti had an emergency meeting with important PDP leaders to review the situation arising out of his resignation. Mehbooba Mufti has to work overtime to keep her flock together. For, one more explosion in the PDP would mean the beginning of a process that would not only result in the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government but also result in the collapse of the party itself. Indeed, the PDP is in crisis and the PDP-BJP government in jeopardy. The next couple of days would be very crucial for the PDP president. She has to contain dissent within a day or two. If she succeeds, the government would survive; if she doesn't, the government would go. The BJP knows it and that's the reason the BJP ministers, who don't want to leave the government, are keeping their fingers crossed. |
