Srinagar children park's broken swings pose threat to kids | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 18: The lone recreational park for children named 'Gulshan-e-Atfaal', at Hazuri Bagh in Srinagar, which was inaugurated during previous NC-Congress regime has been posing a serious threat to children as the authorities have closed their eyes towards repairing of broken swings installed in the park. The park that was thrown open for kids with much fanfare few years back is no longer safe for the children as the swings and slides installed in the park are broken, posing serious threat to the precious lives of these kids."The Floriculture department that was assigned maintenance of this park has been watching the whole scene as mute spectator. Even though children are charged Rs 10 per head as entry fees into the park, nothing is being done to repair or replace the broken swings and slides and other infrastructure there," said locals. Earlier the park was thronged by hundreds of people accompanied by kids in evenings, mostly during summers and on holidays, but now the place is considered as risky for the children. "Now it is dangerous to bring kids here, rather than recreation the swings in park have become dangerous for the children," Saleema, a resident of Wazir Bagh told 'Early Times'. "I along with other parents brought the decaying condition of the swings and slides into the notice of the concerned department but the authorities have time and again turned a deaf ear to our complaints," she bemoaned. Another parent Rukhsana added that the washroom and toilet in the park also remains in shambles. "No one dares to visit these washrooms given the fact they are in terrible condition." The locals criticized the department for making people pay entry fees saying, "it would have been genuine to seek entry fee if department maintained the park and swings, but when department has failed to maintain it, what is the logic of making people pay for entry into this park?" Pertinently, the park was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in 2009. The park had turned out to be one of the major attractions for kids. But now the locals say they hardly see anyone in the park. "The dilapidated infrastructure has proved to be a major spoiler to visitors," they added. Pertinently, another such park which was thrown open for the kids at Eidgah grounds in Srinagar has also become dangerous for kids as the slides in this park too are broken and could result in fatal accidents. |
