PM vows to act strongly against attackers; HM reviews security, asks forces to go offensive | India lodges strong protest with Pakistan over its role in militant attack at Uri army camp | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 18: India has strongly protested with Pakistan for the role of neighbouring country in the militant attack at an army camp in the Uri area of North Kashmir's frontier district of Baramulla in the wee hours today. The protest was conveyed by Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Lieutenant Colonel Ranbir Singh to his Pakistani counterpart. Lt Col Singh called on his Pakistani counterpart and conveyed his strong protest over its involvement in the militant attack in the Uri area that led to death of 17 soldiers. Four militants who carried out the attack were also killed in the encounter that lasted for some hours. Addressing a press conference, Lt Col Singh said that the identity of the killed militants has been established and all of them are foreigners. He said that the militants owed their allegiance to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group. He said that some of the articles recovered from slain militants clearly indicate that they are residents of Pakistan. The DGMO said that 13-14 soldiers got killed after the tent they were in caught fire following militant attack adding that the rest of the soldiers died in the gunfight with the militants who attack the camp in the early hours. He said that India has conveyed its displeasure and protest over the support extended by Pakistan to the militants operating in Jammu & Kashmir. At the same time Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that those responsible for attacking an army camp in Uri won't go unpunished. "We strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack in Uri. I assure the nation that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished," PM Modi said in a statement. In a tweet Modi said, "Have spoken to HM & RM on the situation. RM will go to J&K himself to take stock of the situation." In another tweet Modi said, "We salute all those martyred in Uri. Their service to the nation will always be remembered. My thoughts are with the bereaved families." At the same time Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar reached here in the evening to take stock of the situation in wake of the militant strike on an army camp in Uri. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, who reached here earlier and other top army officers, briefed the defence minister about the militant attack. Parrikar visited the 92 Base Hospital at Badami Bagh cantonment and interacted with the injured soldiers. He paid tributes to the deceased soldiers and wished speedy recovery to the injured soldiers. Gen Singh who visited the site of the militant strike also interacted with the field commanders. Earlier in the day Home Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the security situation following the militant attack. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar and other senior officials of Army and paramilitary forces briefed the Home Minister on the situation in the state following the militant attack. Sources said that the Home Minister directed that security forces should mount an all-out offensive against militants operating in the valley. Those who attended the meeting include chiefs of Intelligence Bureau, RA&W, Directors General of Military Operations and Military Intelligence. The Home Minister postponed his visit to Russia and the US in the wake of deadly militant attack in Uri and the continuing unrest in the Kashmir Valley. The valley is on boil since the evening of July 8 after Hizbul Mujahideen Commander; Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in an encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 86 persons including four cops have been killed in street protests that broke out after Burhan's killing. |
