To reduce dependence on central forces, Govt speeds up recruitment in JKP | | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 8: The state government has initiated a major process for recruitment in the police to reduce dependence on the central police forces and the army during law and order situations in the Valley. J&K has around 75000 police personnel of which 18000 are deployed as personal security guards of politicians while only 57000 cops are reserved for the law and order situation and other responsibilities in the state. "We remain dependent on central police forces and the army even when there is a minor law and order problem in the state. The state has inadequate police personnel of its own. Now it has been decided to increase its strength to reduce the dependence on central forces and control internal security and law and order situations," a senior official said. He said the government has started the process of making recruitment in police department at a large scale so that larger role is given to JK police in dealing with law and order situation. The Home Ministry has approved recruitment of additional 10,000 special police officers (SPOs) in the state police force. There are 25,000 SPOs in Jammu and Kashmir. A recruitment drive is currently going on across the Valley in which hundreds of youth have participated in recruitment rallies so far. Forces in the state are facing a tough time to deal with the prevailing situation with around 90 people having been killed and over 13000 civilians have been injured. The increasing number of injured people during the clashes has put into focus in political circles whether the JK police was well-equipped and better trained to deal with the situation so that causalities would have been less in number. Earlier, the government has started a scheme for modernizing of police forces in India including in J&K for providing cops with secure police stations, training centers, police housing (residential), equipping the police stations with the required mobility, modern weaponry, communication equipment and forensic set-up. Sources said the union home ministry has released a huge funds to the state for modernizing of JK police but there has not been much difference on the ground. A senior police official said the ongoing crisis has forced the state police to adopt new techniques to deal with the situation. "The security forces will be well equipped with the modernization programme so that they deal with the situation in a better way without much human loss," the official said. Earlier, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India had also criticized J&K government for providing "poor infrastructure and lack of basic facilities for the state police force that needs it the most in the country." |
