As 12 year old boy succumbs to injuries death toll in Kashmir violence reaches 89 | Normal life remains paralyzed across Kashmir | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 8: The death toll in 92 day long Kashmir unrest reached 89 today after a 12 year old succumbed to his pellet injuries at a hospital here. In the meantime, a 10 year old boy sustained serious injuries during clashes in the Eidgah area. Normal life continues to be paralyzed across Kashmir valley due to the shutdown called by separatists against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Wani and the subsequent killing of civilians across Kashmir. Curfew remained in force in areas falling under Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Batmaloo police stations. Restrictions under section 144 were in force at other places in the valley. Reports said that 12 year old boy identified as Junaid Ahmad Akhoon resident of Saidapora-Eidgah succumbed to his injuries at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura here in the morning. Junaid had suffered serious injuries in his head and chest in the clashes at Saidapora in old city on Friday evening. Junaid was rushed to SKIMS-Soura in a critical condition where he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He breathed his last in the wee hours today and following this his body was handed to his relatives for last rites. In Soura area clashes erupted between youth and security forces following Junaid's death. Some people sustained injuries during the clashes. Clashes also broke out in the Saidapora and Anchar areas during which security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the agitating youth who were pelting stones on them. Reports said that six students were injured in Central Kashmir's Budgam district after security forces resorted to teargas shelling to break up their rally while they were protesting against the examination schedule announced recently by the government. Students, including females, staged a rally in Kawoosa -Khalisa area and marched towards Srinagar-Gulmarg highway. The security forces deployed on the highway resorted to teargas shelling to chase away the students. The same led to clashes resulting in injuries to at least six students. A statement issued by Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir said the situation remained by and large peaceful across Kashmir valley today although a few stray stone pelting incidents were reported. "As a precautionary measure curfew remained imposed in few police stations of Srinagar city. There was no curfew elsewhere in the valley. The markets were open across Kashmir and vendors continued to do their normal business in the streets, lanes and by lanes in Srinagar city and in other towns of the valley," said the statement. The statement said that traffic movement continued to grow across the towns and roads connecting different towns of Kashmir valley. The statement said that 61 persons involved in different offences of creating public disorder and disruption of normal activities were arrested by police during past 24 hours from various places in Kashmir valley. |
