Now, ‘Birbal’ submits ‘mercy petition’ to Geelani, recalls his kisses and hugs | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 11: Gone are the days when a minister in J&K would command the masses. Nowadays, the ministers plead before separatist leaders to help them restore normalcy in Kashmir. In a surprising development, J&K's Education Minister Naeem Akhtar Andrabi, often mired in controversies and known in the media as 'Birbal' for his political machinations, has written an open letter to hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani. In the letter published in an English daily in Srinagar on Tuesday, the minister has strived to touch the emotional cord by revealing how much respect he has for Geelani, the architect of anti-India agitations in the Valley. The letter in addition to revealing the inner state of mind of the minister has reflected how the people who are the helm have expressed helplessness before the Pak funded separatists. "I am sure if I meet you again in life you would show the same affection that you always displayed towards me. I still feel the warmth of your kisses on my forehead whenever we met and truly believe my assassin would have to target some other part of my body for my forehead bears a love mark planted by you," reads the minister's letter to Geelani. The minister further in his letter tried to compare himself with the people of the separatist ideology. "This place could survive the murder of the likes of Moulana Farooq, Abdul Ghani Lone, Moulana Masoodi, Dr Guru, Dr Farooq Ashai, Dr Wani, Jaleel Andrabi and countless others falling victim to guns of all description. Sadly it still is on. And I don't count myself as in any way important enough even to be mourned. If I die one of these days or am killed I know my family might find it difficult even to get a burial place for me, for your condemnation comes with more than a death warrant. It carries a stigma," the letter reads further. The minister didn't stop here. He dragged religion into the issue. "I believe in the same God and profess the same faith as you do. Who can teach you the Quranic verdict of the timing of death being unalterable? It will come when it has to, for me, you and everybody. But I may remind you of a lesson that you taught me more than three decades back. It is an anecdote you have recorded in one of your books and therefore part of our history," mentions the minister, followed by one incident when he along with a top police official met Geelani in a Jammu hospital more than 30 years ago. The minister then named Geelani's two sons to give personal touch to the letter. "My best wishes to Nayeem sahib and Naseem sahib. Hope they are well." The letter by the senior minister to Geelani has once again confirmed how helpless mainstream politicians and ministers are before separatists in Kashmir. |
