Kashmir's CD hospital on brink of closure | | | Majid Nabi Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 15: Patients at Kashmir's lone chest diseases hospital at Dalgate here are craving for basic facilities. Sources at the hospital told Early Times that most of the patients after being let down due to the pitiable infrastructure prefer to go to private nursing homes to get treated. Sources said the hospital, which was established by Christian missionaries over a century ago primarily for treatment of tuberculosis, lacks basic facilities like proper heating arrangement and life saving paraphernalia. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital is virtually defunct and has been locked for the patients. The hospital besides lacking basic infrastructure like X-ray, CT Scan and USG machines, has also non- functional labs, forcing patients to conduct vital tests from private labs. "What is the fun of having this hospital here where patients are treated like animals? Government should improve it or close it down?" Mohammad Ismael Parray of Langate Kupwara told Early Times. Another patient Lateefa of Dangiwacha said that she is suffering from tuberculosis for the past two years but couldn't get treated because the hospital sans basic facilities. "While the hospital is committed to provide free treatment for needy, we are being forced to conduct even X-ray from private labs as the equipment has become non-functional," said Lateefa. This hospital has state-of-the art ICU but lies defunct due to shortage of staff. "There is no cardiac thoracic surgeon even as a theater exists," sources said. No senior official from the Health department was available for comment. |
