IIM united Kashmir against Jammu | BJP of indifference | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 15: On Thursday, the Union Government announced setting up of Institute of Management (IIM) in Jammu and set apart Rs 61.90 crore for the sanctioned institute, which would be spent not in one go but within four years. It was not a new decision; it formed part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Rs 80,000 crore package for the state. There was nothing in the decision which caused hullabaloo in Kashmir and all the more because Kashmir was also part of the decision. The decision not only evoked a very negative and anti-Jammu response from NC working president Omar Abdullah but also from many others in the Valley. They in one voice said that Jammu was being preferred and Kashmir discriminated against - a complaint the people of Jammu and Ladakh had been making since 1947. And they forgot that Kashmir was part of the state and that if the state was to be maintained as one political unit then they had to adopt an attitude that didn't convey an impression that they were opposed to Jammu and Ladakh. The point is that all Kashmiri leaders, civil society groups have joined hands against Jammu and lambaste not only the PDP and BJP but also the Congress, which had been out of power since January 2015 both in the state and at the centre. "The present unrest has put the PDP in tight spot and Omar has got a chance to castigate it but the fact of the matter is that regional partners in Kashmir have been at the receiving end, while the national parties have had a upper hand since 2002, as it led to the beginning of coalition era in JK," the critics said. The critics also said: "Prior to BJP it was Congress which thrived inJammu region at the cost of National Conference and now it's BJP which is calling the shots at the cost of the PDP". The critics further said: "When union government sanctioned AIIMS for Kashmir, people in Jammu raised hue and cry and launched an agitation against the decision of the union government. They literally compelled the Government of India to sanction AIIMS for Jammu". It's not true. The AIIMS was announced by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on the floor of the Lok Sabha on February 28, 2015 during his budget speech. It was expected that the J&K BJP would hit out at the enemies of Jammu and set the record straight by explaining the decision of the Union Government based on the Prime Minister's financial package of Rs 80,000 crore but it didn't. The result is that the vested interests in Kashmir are misleading the gullible Kashmiris with a view to further creating bitterness between them and New Delhi and between them and the PDP. Ironically, the PDP also didn't say a word to debunk the claims of the vested interests in the Valley. The PDP-BJP Government should not allow the vested interests in Kashmir to make out an issue out of a non-issue. It would be in their interest. To remain mum on the issue would be only to enable the vested interests to further vitiate the atmosphere in the already restive Valley. They should speak and not remain mum. |
