'Indian Muslims rejected Pak in 1947, will be repenting today' | PDP leader plays politics on Uniform Civil Code | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 20: Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, a senior leader of the ruling PDP and chairperson of J&K Women's Rights Commission, Nayeema Mehjoor, has dropped a bombshell, saying Indian Muslims "must be repenting their decision" of having stayed back in the country at the time of partition in 1947. "Indian Muslims in dilemma…they preferred to stay in India in 1947 believing that this country has secular credentials n rejected religion to become the basis of the country...unfortunately, most of them will be repenting today when their faith has now come under the attack of the Right Wing........from beef to Ram Mandir to UCC to discrimination, This is not the same country they fought for," Mehjoor, a former journalist, said in her Facebook post. The post took netizens by surprise in Kashmir with many saying that they endorse her views. The PDP leader has given a vent to her feelings when her party's alliance with the BJP in the state has been avoiding any statements over the discussion for implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, lest it pushes the alliance in any bitter relations. Sources said the twin parties, particularly the PDP, has asked its party cadres not to comment over the issues, which can put their alliance with the BJP at stake. But Nayeema Mehjoor's comment is feared to trigger a controversy. Sources privy to the PDP leader said she was not in good terms with some of the PDP ministers and thus wanted to prick the alliance on some newsy issue. "For the past three months she was also being trolled on the social media for being silent over Kashmir unrest. Now to save her own skin, she found it opportune to play the Pakistan card, something which can fetch her goodwill from some quarters in the Valley," said a senior PDP leader, claiming to be in know of the matter. Insiders said her party leadership has taken a serious note of her "controversial remarks." "Does she want to say that Indian Muslims would have been much safer and prosperous with Pakistan, or she wants to please the neighboring country out of some hidden agenda," said a PDP leader. The PDP has decided to pick up the matter with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and to decide on the future course of action. "This is something irresponsible and we need to seek explanation from her," he added. Meanwhile the sources said the state chapter of the BJP has also taken a serious note of Mehjoor's remarks and have asked the PDP to resolve the matter before it snowballs into any controversy. Nayeema Mehjoor could not be contacted for comments. |
