Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 20: The disturbing figures about rising crime rate in J&K is coming to fore with the state leading ahead of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh in crimes related to abduction and kidnapping of people including children. The figures issued by the Home Affairs department reveal that there are as many as 477 cases of abduction reported every year from J&K. The rate of abduction in the state has gone up with records revealing that at present it is no less than 3.9 percent when compared with the rest of India. On the contrary, Gujarat had 234 cases of abduction reported which is even not half of what is being witnessed in J&K. Similarly, Himachal Pradesh recorded 56 cases of abduction while as Arunachal Pradesh has just 53 cases. There are other states in India as well that haven't seen the rate of kidnapping as much as has been recorded in J&K. They include Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and several others. Reports inform that most of the people kidnapped in the state are either women or Children. There have been numerous instances when police had to press into service its most capable men to solve the kidnapping cases that are somehow witnessing surge here at large. Pertinent to mention here that last year, J&K was shamed again on the eve of International Women's Day after a Class X student was allegedly abducted and raped when she was on her way to school in Kathua district. Furthermore, the police on April last year arrested a woman and rescued two teenage girls who had been kidnapped. Interestingly, India ranks second after Mexico on the list of kidnapping hotspots around the world, reports say. India's neighbours, Pakistan and Afghanistan, rank third and seventh on the list, respectively. The list published by Control Risk based the ranking on reports of abductions. International reinsurers who provide kidnap and ransom cover to Indian and multi-national corporations refer to this list. According to the report, insurers say that India being ahead of countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan on the list means that number of complaints regarding kidnaps are being made and is increasing. While kidnappings may not be an organised business in India, there are frequents incidents taking place in the North and East of the country. This means that India is beginning to be seen as market for selling kidnap and ransom insurance policies. Among the most 10 sensational kidnappings in entire India, one is from J&K. It was in done in 1999 when the JKLF militants kidnapped the daughter of then Indian Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The case is still being termed as the most dramatic and sensational one. |
