Centre's interlocutor demoralizing army in terrorist-infested Kashmir | 'Peace process' at nation's cost | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 12: The Centre's so-called special representative to Jammu and Kashmir, Dineshwar Sharma, is crossing the red line again and again and lowering the morale of the armed forces by making uncalled for statements on the ongoing counter-insurgency operation in the terrorist-infested Kashmir Valley. What he said the other day was highly objectionable and a direct attack on the institution of Indian Army, which is known the world over as the most professional and disciplined. He virtually accused the armed forces of killing innocent civilian Muslims in Kashmir, thus giving ammunition to Pakistan and other hostile elements to defame India and the armed forces. Reacting to the Shopian killing two terrorists and four over round workers of terrorists on March 4, Sharma asked security forces in Jammu and Kashmir to "show restraint" in the Valley". "Stop Civilian killings must stop," Sharma said. Sharma also said: Army must not resort to disproportionate firing". "I was hoping for a better summer but violence has come as a setback," the former Intelligence Bureau chief also said, adding that "among the south Kashmir districts, Shopian was 'particularly alienated' and angry" and "We (the Armed forces) must be sensitive while dealing with the people of Kashmir" He made this uncalled statement while rejecting the Army's point of view. The Army had said the "civilians killed in the encounter were OGWs" OGW is a term used to refer to "non-combatants who provide logistical support for militant groups". Ever since his appointment as a special representative of the Government of India on October 23, 2017, Dineshwar Sharma has visited the state 6 times. His latest trip was to Shopian on February 24. He visited the town three OGWs were killed in Army firing in January 27. The Army had claimed "it killed the civilians in self defence". Currently, he is touring Ladakh and meeting delegations. It is strange that neither the Defence Ministry nor the Union Home Minister has spoken on what Dineshwar Sharma said to hamper the anti-insurgency operations in the Valley by making highly controversial statements. They must tell him not to make any controversial statement that hurts the nation and weakens the resolve of the Army, which is conducting anti-insurgency operations not on its own, but at the behest of the establishment. |
