IDPD condemns Govt for not meeting ICAN delegation | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 29: The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD), coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP), All India Peace and Solidarity Organization (AIPSO) have condemned the attitude of the government of not meeting the international delegation of the ICAN, the Nobel Prize winner in 2017. The leaders of these organizations asked the government why it is afraid of disarmament movement to the extent that it avoids meeting ordinary doctors who are working for the promotion of health for all by proposing increase in the public health expenditure by diverting wasteful spending on arms particularly the nuclear arms. Various studies on humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons have proved through scientific evidence that nuclear war in present times could be catastrophic and end of modern civilization. Concerned with these impacts, the UNGA passed a treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons (TPNW) on 7th July 2017 by 122 Vs one vote. The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), major partner in the ICAN had played pivotal role in highlighting the health impact of nuclear weapons and therefore vociferously demanded their abolition. As a result of these efforts, the TPNW was passed in the UNGA. It prohibits use, production, testing, trade, keeping them on alert or any other activity on these weapons as illegal. For these efforts the ICAN was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for 2017. Ironically none of the 9 nuclear weapons possessing states, the USA, Russia, UK, France, China, Israel, India, Pakistan or North Korea participated in the deliberations of the treaty. The ICAN therefore decided to launch mass campaign in all these countries by holding public events and then to hold a dialogue with decision makers (DWDM) and impress upon the governments to join the treaty. The first of the kind seminar was organised in India in Delhi in March. After the seminar appointment was sought with the President, Prime Minster, Foreign Minister, Defense Minister and the Chairman of standing committee of Parliament on defense Gen B C Khanduri through request letter forwarded by a member of parliament in January. None of the above dignitaries cared even to reply to the request for meeting with an international delegation of a Nobel Peace Prize winning organisation. Only Gen Khanduri replied and fixed a meeting on 26th March. He confirmed it at around 9 am when contacted on telephone. But at 10.30 am through an e mail he expressed inability to meet the delegation on health grounds. All this seems to be an afterthought and under the directives from high ups. Dr Arun Mitra-Co President IPPNW, Achin Vanaik & Anil Chaudhary-Founder members of CNDP, Pallab Sen Gupta-Genera Secretary AIPSO, Dr S S Soodan-President and Dr Shakeel ur Rahman-General Secretary IDPD said that the movement will be spread throughout the country. They appealed to the government not to be afraid of the movement for nuclear disarmament but cooperate with it. |
