Vajpayee a visionary, but Omar quit his Govt | Why Farooq praise Vajpayee? | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 29: NC president Farooq Abdullah has yet again hailed former PM AB Vajpayee and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tread the path his senior leader charted for the BJP to resolve the Kashmir issue. Commending the initiative of former PM AB Vajpayee for "bringing peace" on borders and engaging Pakistan in dialogue, Farooq Abdullah has asked Narendra Modi to follow the "foot prints of Vajpayee" and added that "situation would have been different if Vajpayee, had he got another opportunity to serve for the second term as Prime Minister". Farooq Abdullah also recalled the Vajpayee's words that "friends can be changed but not the neighbour", and added that 'Vajpayee was a great visionary Prime Minister", who, according to him, read the pulse of the people and tried his best to restore peace between India and Pakistan. "I wish good sense prevails on the Prime Minister Modi so that he follows in the footsteps of Vajpayee" was the upshot of his whole argument. Why Farooq praises Vajpayee? Reasons are not far to seek. A propounder of "anti-state Kashmiriyat, Insaniyat and Jamhooriat doctrine," Vajpayee had almost indicated that he would implement former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf's J&K formula that stood for shared sovereignty of India and Pakistan in this part of Jammu & Kashmir, irrelevant borders, India-Pakistan joint-control over Jammu & Kashmir, demilitarization of Jammu & Kashmir, self-governance and 7-way split of the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir. In other words, Vajpayee stood for a compromise of the age-old stand of the country that Jammu & Kashmir was, is and shall always remain an integral part of India. To be more precise, Vajpayee's Kashmir policy was based on the notion that Jammu & Kashmir was a disputed territory and Pakistan was a stakeholder in the state. Farooq says that Vajpayee was a visionary but thought it politically prudent not to say that his son Omar Abdullah had quit Vajpayee's ministry saying that it was a mistake on the part of the NC to become an ally of the BJP-led NDA and that he would never go near the BJP. It's strange that while Farooq praises Vajpayee, his son Omar Abdullah quit the visionary's government to support Manmohan Singh's UPA Government. Farooq Abdullah forgets that Kashmir is a small part of the state and that there are also Jammu and Ladakh where an overwhelming majority of population opposes autonomy, self-rule, any kind of dialogue with Pakistan and wants the Union Government to integrate Jammu & Kashmir fully into India convinced that separation of the state from India would mean its destruction. |
