| Despite HC's direction, GMC purchases FVIII at high rates | | | Nitesh Sangral

Jammu, Mar 29: Ignoring J&K High Court's directions to purchase Factor VIII (FVIII) at lowest rates, the Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu and associated hospitals made purchases at exorbitant rates.
The HC's order copy in possession of Early Times states that on March 23, 2018, Judge Alok Aradhe disposed of writ petition filed by Advocate Ankur Sharma by directing the respondent to procure the drugs for haemophilia patients before March 31, 2018 from competitive available lowest suppliers.
FVIII is an essential blood-clotting protein, also known as anti-hemophilic factor (AHF).
If official sources are to be believed, the hospital authorities made purchases from a company allegedly under the influence of some doctors who are not willing to administer drugs of other companies to patients. It exposes the alleged nexus of some doctors with pharmaceutical companies.
Earlier, some senior doctors, seeking anonymity, said that the purchase committee had decided to buy the purchase factor before March 31, 2018. But some doctors were not ready to buy the factors from the suppliers with lowest rates, following which a writ petition was filed in court. The court asked concern authorities to the drug as soon as possible at lowest rates available.
Principal of GMCH Jammu Dr Sunanda Raina had sought permission from Director Finance to purchase the drug on the pattern of GMC Srinagar. The permission was granted. But without checking whether lowest rates were available, the purchases were made, causing loss to the exchequer.
"Despite availability of lowest rates, the purchase committee followed footsteps of GMC Srinagar and made purchase to allegedly benefit some doctors of the hospital," sources said.
Advocate Ankur Sharma said a contempt plea has been filed in the court against Medical Superintendent of the SMGS hospital for disobeying the court directions.
The supplier who had given lowest rates has also filed a writ petition in the court. |
