Nowshera border dwellers get family bunkers
4/8/2018 10:00:42 PM
Early Times Report
Rajouri, Apr 8: Border dwellers in Nowshera sub division in Rajouri district have first time since independence been provided with 'family bunkers' at their back yards and each unit can accommodate 10-16 people for short period and 10 persons for longer period.
Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhry, DDC said that each bunker has also been provided with toilet complex under Swatch Bharat mission and the project has been completed within a shortest possible time. Pertinent to mention that the inhabitants of border villages in Rajouri district have been demanding construction of individual and community bunkers since independence but none of the government came forward for their rescue and during last year's heavy mortar shelling and skirmishes on the LoC, 8 people have lost their lives and more than 179 houses were damaged.
More than 4500 people migrated to relief camps established by authorities in Nowshera town in May 2017 due to heavy shelling and widespread damages due to ceasefire violation. The district administration started a pilot project to construct 100 family-type bunkers for safety of civilians in September 2017. Community type bunkers were later started near schools and police posts. "The project cost for one unit was pegged at Rs 2.40 Lakh out of which Rs 90,000 was dovetailed from MGNREGA while Rs 1.50 Lakh was provided under CapEx budget. The Chief Secretary J&K frequently reviewed the progress and extended prompt financial support to the project" said DDC.
He added the project was designed as community driven for asset-ownership. Every family contributed its share in addition to the project cost. The bunkers have also been provided one toilet unit under the Swachh Bharat Mission. "The technical design of the bunker withstands the kind of weaponry frequently used in such ceasefire violations. The LoC runs through 120KM long stretch in the district across 72 villages in 6 Tehsils while nearly 22 villages are worst hit" said DDC.
He also informed that such bunkers will also be constructed in Manjakote, Panjgrain, Doongi where recently ceasefire violations were reported. In the first phase the 'family bunkers' were constructed in Jhangar, Kalsian, Danaka, Sarya, Laroka, Sair, Makdi, Namb and Kadali villages in Nowshera tehsil. Ministry of Home Affairs have also sanctioned 5000 'individual' and 374 'community bunkers for Rajouri district but the money was not released yet.
