'Embezzlement' of funds meant for Kulgam Youth Festival | Govt fails to initiate probe | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Kulgam, Apr 8: Jammu and Kashmir Government has failed to initiate a probe into alleged embezzlement of money meant for Kulgam Youth Festival organized by the district administration last year. Highly placed sources claimed that some politicians were shielding the officers and employees, who they claim are involved in the scam. They said that organizers of Kulgam Youth Festival floated norms to benefit some blue-eyed firms and agencies. "These firms were paid huge sums for providing refreshment to children who participated in the event," they added. Organizers are understood to have also paid huge amount to firms for providing tents and video -graphing the events. "Flex boards and other sports items have also been procured on exorbitant rates," sources said. Last month, students, who were declared winners in Kulgam Youth Festival, alleged huge embezzlement of money meant for the festival. They claimed that organizers didn't provide them the cash prize money they were promised. The Kulgam Youth festival was organized by Deputy Administration last year and was funded by the Local MLA's and Parliamentarian Nazir Ahmad Laway. However, after Early Times published a detailed reported on March 14 this year about alleged embezzlement into Kulgam Youth Festival, the local legislators refused to provide money for the festival. "May please stop the payment of Rupees 10 Lakh out of my CDF for the program which has been requested earlier," MLA Devsar Mohd Amin Bhat wrote to DC Kulgam last month. Similarly other legislators too have refused to provide any sort of financial assistance to the district administration after students' alleged embezzlement. Ironically after two weeks, the government has failed to initiate a probe. |
