Naeem Akhtar calls DyCM "careless," BJP silent | Rassana case | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 1: PDP-BJP coalition government actually coalition of controversies. And the victim of the controversies always is the BJP, which has 26 MLAs, three Lok Sabha members and 10 MLCs. It kneels, not the PDP, for reasons best known to it. However, people say "the BJP means a party of compromises" and that "it could go to any extent to retain control over a few chairs in the all-powerful Kashmir-dominated Cabinet". The BJP is superior to the PDP both in terms of vote-share and number of law-makers and still it suffers humiliations at the hands of the PDP. It was the PDP which forced PM Narendra Modi and HM Rajnath Singh to direct Lal Singh and CP Ganga to tender resignations from the ministry on April 13, Baisakhi Day. They were shown the door for what the PDP termed as two sins. One, the BJP ministers shared dais with Hindu Ekta Manch leaders at Kootah, Kathua. Two, they vouched for CBI probe into the alleged Kathua rape and murder case. CM Mehbooba Mufti herself disclosed that she had asked the PM and the HM that the presence of these two BJP ministers became untenable after their visit to Kootah and they will have to be shown the door to assuage the hurt feelings of members of a particular community. The PM and the HM yielded. On Monday, the PDP made another issue to show the BJP its place and demonstrate that it was the PDP whose writ shall always run and the BJP ministers will have to fall in line and say what it wanted to say. What happened on Monday was that the newly-appointed Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta said that the Kathua case was a "minor issue" and "our efforts should be to ensure that no such crimes took place in the future and get the guilty punished as per law". He was responding to a media query. His remarks caused outrage in Kashmir. The PDP and opposition parties took no time in condemning him for his controversial remarks. Condemning the Dy CM's remarks, senior PDP leader and spokesman of J&K Government Naeem Akhtar said Kavinder Gupta's remark was a careless comment given the fact that Prime Minister and President of India have condemned this criminal act in strongest possible words. "The careless comment by Dy CM is in total contradiction of the statements of Prime Minister and the President of India. The concern shown at the international level triggered a change in the law making this criminal act a punishable offence and awarding capital punishment to the culprits," he said, adding that the "government has proved that it won't compromise quality of investigation and determination for justice to the Rassana victim". Not only the J&K Government but NC working president and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly also pounced upon the newly-appointed Dy CM as well as CM Mehbooba Mufti herself. "What justice can one expect from Mehbooba Mufti when her Deputy CM calls the rape and murder of an 8 year old a minor incident' that the media shouldn't focus on. Two BJP ministers removed in J&K for attending a pro-rapist rally & a MLA who is reported to have attended the same rally is promoted as a minister. Why are the BJP and Mehbooba Mufti confused about where they stand on the Rassana rape". Interestingly, the BJP has not reacted one way or the other to what J&K Government's spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said about the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party and Dy CM. The opposition parties have equally taken a dig at Akhter's statement. "How can a minister publicly ridicule his Cabinet colleague and term him careless? If the two parties are not on the same page why don't they part ways?" a National Conference leader told Early Times. When politicians are questioning Akhter's remarks, Gupta's own party BJP is silent. Not a single BJP minister has countered Akhter. "This is the height of shamelessness that you cannot even dare to raise voice against your alliance partner who calls Deputy CM's remarks as careless," said a BJP leader on the condition of anonymity. He said some of the lower-rung BJP leaders had suggested that Naeem AKhter should be asked as to how come he spoke to media against the Deputy CM. "If the two partners are not convinced with each other, why to continue with the alliance," the leaders are understood to have argued. "But were told to be silent and this embarrassment was termed a small issue," a BJP leader said. The BJP is already divided over the ouster of some faces and introduction of new faces into the Cabinet. Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav, on the other hand, has said that Cabinet reshuffle had nothing to with the controversy surrounding the Kathua rape and murder. |
