Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 14: On Wednesday, Pakistani butchers 4 BSP jawans in Samba. Their killing in an unprovoked firing sent shock waves across the country. Here in Jammu, several groups protested the martyrdom of the 4 BSP jawans demanding stringent action against Pakistan and demanding withdrawal of Ramzan ceasefire.
Those who were martyred included Assistant Commandant Jitendra Singh (34), Sub-inspector Rajneesh Kumar (32), Constable Hansraj Gurjar (28) and Assistant SI Ram Niwas (52) were killed. Pakistani Rangers used both precision weapons and mortars and they launched attack from the Asraf post of the Pakistan Rangers.
The same day, a report appeared which said that "at least 11 BSF troops have been killed in cross-border firing incidents along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir till date in 2018, the highest casualty figure for the border force in a year in the last five years, a latest data revealed".
The report said: "As per the data, over 320 unprovoked firing incidents have taken place this year till date, leading to the killing of 11 BSF personnel and injuring 37 others. In comparison to this, a total of 111 unprovoked cross-border firing instances took place last year along this front (Jammu IB) while the figures were 204 incidents (in 2016), 350 (in 2015) and 127 during 2014".
Despite ceasefire agreements, Pakistan has resorted to blatant violations and continues with unprovoked cross border fire also on Jammu IB. "After DGMO level talks on May 29 and sector commander level meeting of BSF and Pak Rangers on June 4 and telephonic talk on June 12, it was agreed to maintain peace and tranquility on the Jammu IB," a BSF spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Wednesday was a day when the authorities in the state and at the centre should have sat up together to review the ceasefire fallouts within the state and on the Jammu IB and withdraw it forthwith taking into consideration what the country witnessed in the state after May 16, when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh sprung a big surprise announcing unilateral ceasefire during the month of Ramzan. But it was not to be. Contrarily, the J&K Government came out with a suggestion that ceasefire should be extended to the borders.
"The suspension of operations elsewhere in the state has given the people a sigh of relief and hoped the same is extended to the borders and an atmosphere of peace returns to these areas which had prevailed for more than a decade due to the peace efforts of both the neighbouring countries in 2003 around," the J&K Government said while reacting to the killing of four BSF jawans in Jammu.
It was expected that the Union Government and the BJP, which is at the helm of affairs in New Delhi and a part of the J&K Government would reject the J&K Government's suggestion, but nothing of this sort has happened so far. Neither the Union Government nor the BJP thought it politically prudent to said a word on what the J&K Government said, thus suggesting that the Union Government and the BJP have resolved to give a freehand to the J&K Government.
The manner in which the J&K Government suggested extension of ceasefire to the Jammu borders and the way the Union Government and the BJP ignored what the J&K Government said only suggests that the national security is in jeopardy.
