SKUAST organizes farmers' training | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 4: In its pursuit to aware the farmers on conservation and retention of moisture for successful raising of Kharif crops, specialized training programmes were organized for the farmers practicing rain dependent farming in Khaner and Madana villages of district Samba adopted under National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) Project. The focus of these training programmes was to aware the farmers enabling them to combat aberrant or uncertain weather situations particularly with respect to moisture availability during different crop growth phases. The programme was organized by All India Coordinated Research Project on Dryland Agriculture (AICRPDA), Rakh Dhiansar under the aegis of SKUAST-Jammu in which the farmers of the adopted villages under NICRA project have participated and interacted with AICRPDA scientists during the programmes. At the outset, Dr A. P. Singh, Sr. Scientist and Incharge, All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Dryland Agriculture and Principal Investigator, NICRA Project welcomed the farmers and briefed about the scientific interventions to harvest rain water for prolonged retention and its utilization to cope up with the dry spells which may occur during the cropping season. He further exhorted the farmers to adopt climate resilient agri-technologies as envisaged under NICRA project to boost their crop yields and improved livelihoods. Dr. Jai Kumar, Scientist (Agronomy) while addressing to the participating farmers, stressed on to follow the diversified farming to enhance their livelihood. He motivated the farmers to adopt various moisture conservation techniques. He further stressed to follow the scientific package and practices as recommended by SKUAST-Jammu for the cultivation of various crops under rainfed situations. Dr. Brinder Singh, Scientist (Soils) discussed at length about the soil sampling techniques and importance of balanced nutrition in crops. During the programme farmers were also taught about the latest scientific agro-techniques for the cultivation of field crops particularly during Kharif season while utilizing the locally available farm resources to uplift their socio-economic conditions. |
