Degenerating moral and ethical values | | Shiv Kumar Padha Basohli | 7/4/2018 10:58:41 PM |
| After a long freedom struggle the nation could throw off the yoke of slavery by sacrificing thousands of precious lives on the altar of Maa Bharti. The foreign invaders not only plundered Indian treasures of wealth but many of them permanently settled here which gave great set back to the Indian culture and the values which India has been nurturing and preserving for its coming generations. The Britishers settled in India under the guise of traders, who, later on spreading their tentacles brought the whole country directly under the British control. The Britishers not only considered India as their colony but played havoc with the values and the culture of the land so long as they ruled India. The Education system which Lord Macauly tailored specially for the Indians was mischievously conceived with the sole purpose of preparing the Indian generation with flesh and bones like that of Indians with the mind that of the English. The Macaulay system of Education was totally devoid of cultural, ethical, moral and national values because the text books in History and languages were designed in such a way where all the historical, religious and national facts were presented in a mutilated manner. After independence there has been a great deal of enthusiasm particularly among the young men to rebuild their nation and to have the clear idea of the India that is to be. Before any engineer begins the construction of any building he must have the idea of the purpose that building will be put to use. If we turn the pages of history we see how great India was in power, wealth and happiness during the times of Ashoka, Chandergupt and others. During the Vedic and Budhist periods India had great ideals which could make India so great in the past. But it is matter to be thought about seriously as to what have been the causes which resulted into the degeneration of the ethical values India was known for. So in order to constructing future India we must accept the ideals which made it great and reject those caused degeneration and downfall.. India got freedom in 1947 and became republic on 26 th Jan. 1950. The nation reposed full confidence in the capability, capacity, credibility, commitment and honesty of persons who formed the government after the first parliamentary elections in 1951-1952. The persons in the first Indian elected government, were the men of integrity and farsightedness who spared no efforts in rebuilding India of their dreams. But, in the absence of ombudsman, lack of accountability and transparency in the matters of the governance, many covetous parliamentarians and the legislators of the future governments of the states and the centre felt tempted by the unguarded national and state coffer and started devising the methods to siphon off the poor tax payers money in connivance with the bureaucrats. In order to further their hidden plans the politicians gave free hand to the corrupt, anti social and antinational elements to carry out the illegal, un ethical and immoral activities with impunity. Political patronage, In adequate laws, inactiveness of law enforcing agencies, lack of civic sense in the society, flaws and lacunas in the criminal laws have resulted into the formation of wrong habits in the citizens of the country which, in no way conform to the ethical and moral values India has been known for in the world. Out of the endless list of the vices India has been suffering from, corruption, non payments of bank loans, tax evasions, loss of the public property and precious lives as a result of mass scale violence, arson and plunder during bunds, misusing and stealing of public property, adulteration are some of the canker sores which are eating into the vitals of the national life. Nations do not attain heights in the world merely through attractive slogans, wall writings, daily oaths and pledges or tall claims. There are nations like Japan and S. Korea which recouped soon after the complete devastation of their countries by honesty, sincerity, patriotism and tirless efforts. Waiving off the bank loans, granting subsidy on certain items, freebies, free electricity and water etc. form the headlines of the election manifestos of many political parties. The pre election promises which empty the national coffer are sin and crime before law because these promises corrupt the voters. The money incurred to keep the pre elections promises come from poor man's pocket and not from the pockets of the leaders. The long lists of scams which are made public from time to time by the investigating agencies reveal how top bureaucrat and Ministers, while making purchases for the army, do not hesitate playing with the lives of the security forces by compromising with the specifications, quality and the lethal power of the important defence related items like BF Jackets for Jawans, weapons, West Land Helicopters. To equip the army with sub standard weapons, in lieu of commissions, tantamount to treachery with the Jawans who considers the weapons next to god. There is hardly any item from edibles to the medicines spared from adulteration by the traders of death in India. The synthetic ghee, milk, khoya, cooking oils, spices play havoc with the health of the children and the adults. The spurious medicines freely available in the market brazenly are taking the lives of innocent and the poor people daily. The laws available in the country are too week to imprison the culprits for more than five days. The business of manufacturing spurious medicines has become ever flourishing profession under the patronage of the powerful politicians sitting in the parlors of power. Many newly built or under construction structures often collapse due to the brazen use of the sub standard and cheap building materials which take many precious lives in its spate. It is shocking that due to the influence and access in th echelons of power the defaulter contractors escape from accountability and the criminal proceedings for the lapses and the national losses. Every year private and public property worth crores of rupees is either destroyed or set ablaze by the frenzied protesters during the politically sponsored unlawful bunds and hartals which leave dozens as dead as result of violence. The protesters, perhaps, do not know that the national property which they confine to the flames belongs to them and not to any leader or politicians who provoke the mob to do so. They should understand that these national losses will be recovered, sooner or later, from the poor man's pocket in the shape of taxes which he pays while purchasing articles of his daily need. Heads of the nation hung in shame when they watched a stunning news on the national TV news channels about the theft of the materials worth crores of rupees like solar light panels, brass nozzles of the fountains, steel girders and the steel fencing used all along the Meerut NOIDA Express way. It is equally shame full to know that the commuters travelling by the newly introduced high speed Tejus Express train, stole the LED screens provided with the seats for the commuters to watch during the journey. Any illegal, criminal, unethical action of the citizens irrespective of their position and post, with the motive of minting money , is condemnable and punishable under law. We should not feel disappointed or dejected for the degeneration of the values in our country. The situation is not so ghrim yet. It is always better to be late than never. There are still the nations which are known for their nationalism, honesty, dedication for work. For the citizens of such countries country is first and everything last. The citizens of these countries consider the national loss as their own. Unlike India, where the farmers commit suicide for not waiving off their loans as promised before elections, every citizen of Malaysia contributes for payment of the EMIs to repay the national loans. Where in India the country has to bear the loss of human lives as well as that of the national property worth crores during unlawful bunds, the factory laborers in Japan, in order to show their resentment, over work and produce too much to store in the available stores. In south Koria the transport staff, while on strike, do not create any trouble to the daily commuters instead they register their resentment by carrying the passengers without charging any bus fare during the period they remain on strike. Truancy, red tapeism and non disposal of daily work without bribe has become culture in India whereas the official staff in many advanced countries have to apologies for reporting their offices late and leaving early even by one or two minutes. Feasting over the poor man's money through fraudulent means, accepting bribe while making purchases for the army by putting the security of the country in jeopardy and siphoning off the money from the national coffer can be attributed as the betrayal with the nation. Relishing the taste of national wealth can be compared with the taste which the dog enjoys by swallowing the blood of its own gums while chewing the hard bone. The time has come when the home, society, school, educationists, national intelligentsia and politicians need play their roles honestly and help inculcate the values among the budding generation so that they own their own country and consider its loss as their personal one. So in constructing future India we must accept and revive the ideals which made us great, reject what caused degeneration and supply what were not there. |
